Non esagero quando dico che Roma ha un’essenza non paragonabile a nessun’altra capitale nel mondo, e neppure quando dico che le sue opere sembrano parlare, perché no, se nell’anima di ognuno di noi c’è un uomo che vede quello che noi non vediamo, che sente quello che non sentiamo, che percepisce e parla aldilà della nostra tangibile formazione biologica. Pertanto lo dico forte e chiaro che le sentivo rimproverarmi ogni volta che andavo a visitarle: né Roma sopportava l’assenza del suo innamorato né io riuscivo ad arrestare la mia commozione quando la udivo biasimarmi. Questo succedeva durante i miei soggiorni distanziati nella città eterna. Sicuramente sarò seppellito nella terra dei miei avi, ma il mio spirito resterà sempre volteggiante su tutta l’Italia. In particolare su Parma, Bologna, e sulla mia amata Roma. Una divisione che ho sempre sognato dopo il mio rientro dalla mia seconda patria alla mia terra d’origine. Celebrai Roma come “una bella ragazza che non dorme mai”. Come potrebbe riposare se non vuole che i suoi tanti ammiratori siano accolti da nessun altro? Roma è amorevole ed affettuosa, è un museo aperto su tutti i suoi antichi spazi. Il timore che gli anni avrebbero potuto cancellare le mie memorie mi ha portato a scrivere il mio libro Il ladro di Roma che riporta nelle sue pagine alcune delle mie storie vissute durante I miei studi in Italia. MUSTAFA JOUNI, Libanese, ha studiato Ingegneria in Italia, e in seguito è stato impegnato come insegnante, subordinato alla MEA (Middle East Airlines), come lavoratore autonomo. Oltre ai brevi racconti: Il ladro di Roma, ha scritto Miele amaro e poesie del tipo madrigale: Ho Mantenuto la promessa ed È un Sogno.

Mustafa Jouni was born in Lebanon. He traveled to Italy to study Engineering. He then returned to his homeland where he excelled in teaching, public service and business. The author's memories in Italy turned with time into nostalgia, which in turn drove him to write them down as short stories book titled "The Thief Of Rome". The book, originally in Arabic, was translated into Italian and English, and the author has more works in the pipeline, in multiple languages. In his words: "My body may certainly end up buried in the land of my ancestors, but my soul will forever roam the skies of Italy, especially my beloved Rome. This fair fate was the first thought I had when I returned home, and it's a dream I've been having since."

Attraverso un’accurata ricerca documentaria, il volume ricostruisce alcune vicende rocambolesche e poco note dell’Italia post-unitaria. Nelle prime due è chiamato in causa Giuseppe Garibaldi: come destinatario di una spada d’onore; e come mancato nume tutelare di un paesino della Calabria che, cambiando di sito, avrebbe dovuto dar vita a un nuovo insediamento con il nome di Garibaldipoli. Ideatore di tali iniziative incompiute è un personaggio equivoco, dai tratti pirandelliani, Luigi De Negri, protagonista anche delle due storie successive, dapprima nella Napoli di fine ‘800, poi sul Mar Rosso agli albori del colonialismo in cerca di fortuna come imprenditore nel settore della pescicoltura: un avventuriero senza capitali, la cui costante sarà quella di avviare grandi imprese mediante la raccolta pubblica di fondi. Lo caratterizzeranno promesse non mantenute e opere irrealizzate da cui aleggerà il sospetto di una vocazione truffaldina.
