Il libro di Zaccaria è l'undicesimo dei profeti minori. Come Ezechiele, Zaccaria era di origine sacerdotale. Egli si descrive (Zech 1:1) come "il figlio di Berechia". In Ed 5:1 e 6:14 è chiamato "il figlio di Iddo", che era propriamente suo nonno. La sua carriera profetica iniziò nel secondo anno di Dario (520 a.C.), circa sedici anni dopo il ritorno del primo gruppo dall'esilio. Il nome Zaccaria è comune nell'Antico Testamento, e diversi uomini ricevettero questo nome in quel periodo. Il profeta che visse nello stesso periodo di Haggai, e un esempio di influenza politica che fu superata dalla volontà sovrana del Signore fu la liberazione di Giuda e Gerusalemme dai loro nemici politici. Questo evento rafforzò la predicazione di Zaccaria, che ricordava costantemente al popolo che il Signore è sovrano su tutta la terra, anche se le circostanze dicono che non lo è. Il Libro di Zaccaria è diviso in due parti: 1) I Capitoli 1-8 riguardano le visioni e le profezie che Dio diede a Zaccaria, un profeta che era tra gli israeliti che tornarono a Gerusalemme dalla cattività in Babilonia. 2) I Capitoli 9-14 sono una raccolta di messaggi riguardanti il re scelto da Dio e il giorno del Signore.
