Il cerchio piace all’autore di questo libro, costruito concertando, accordando strumenti. Pedale continuo, il dialogismo leopardiano. Tra orizzonte dell’Origine, pensiero in atto, poesia, mentre da capo a fondo vi si affaccia e riaffaccia il grande lirico interrogante del Canto notturno di un pastore errante dell’Asia. Non vi si rifiuta, in compagnia di Giacomo, la sfida. Da qui l’aprirsi, sulla sua scia, per esempio, sì a Rousseau, ma più al suo opposto, a Voltaire. E riserva sorprese l’attenzione di Leopardi non solo alla religione-filosofia della Persia, ma, insieme, all’India antichissima: al Buddha. La mira è al disegno complessivo di un poeta e intellettuale intrigato dal canto di Omero o di Mimnermo o di Anacreonte, o da Qohélet o da Virgilio, o da Dante o dal Monti dell’Iliade, o dal pensare in grande di un Pascal, o dalla prima modernità dei narratori dell’io; ma anche dal canto di un muratore. Da ascoltare come un’epifania dell’Inizio. O da quello di una filatrice di paese. O da quanto insegna la moltitudine senza nome. Dunque un personaggio che frequenta le cime, ma pure conosce la seduzione del ‘margine’. E disponibile, allora, anche alla scommessa del «gettarsi via». Non in cerca, vedi L’infinito, di un cielo mistico-spiritualistico, ma della medicina, chiesta al tragico di esperienze come quella del naufragio, della dolcezza di un pur passeggero, ‘terrestre’ fremito per esserne uscito salvo. E un poeta e pensatore molto preso dal gran problema del male, fino all’abbozzo di un inno all’eterno trionfo del dio-diavolo persiano, Arimane. Un pensante-immaginante anche quando trascende un altro frammento, sul «Tutto è male» – da affidare nel 1826 a un antico «filosofo indiano» – nell’«a me la vita è male» di un pastore asiatico: figura ‘in canto’ del qualunque, e, insieme, del sublime. Come poi due creature dell’ultimo Leopardi: una foglia di faggio, foglia qualunque, ‘da nulla’, ma portatrice di un alto messaggio, in Imitazione, e il fiore gentile della Ginestra.

La vicenda umana di Giacomo Leopardi evoca un elogio della "Vita Saggia" . L'associazione si evidenzia prendendo in esame i valori di resistenza, autono-mia, ragionevolezza, amore per la vita e speranza che sono stati individuati a-nalizzando un insieme "ecologico" centrato sull'interezza della figura del grande poeta-filosofo. Viene proposto un inedito quadro che segue l'ordine cronologico scandito dalle situazioni e dai punti di svolta della sua esperienza di vita che scorrono paralle-lamente alla produzione letteraria. Il tutto diventa coerente e unificante all'interno di un contesto di autoeducazio-ne di cui Leopardi è stato protagonista; un percorso che aiuta a focalizzare l'indagine su una "pedagogia" volta a sviluppare "attitudini virtuose". Il messaggio è rivolto alle nuove generazioni di docenti e di studenti e, in genere, interessa chiunque abbia smarrito, o che non ha ancora percepito, la dimensione universale dell'angoscia provocata dalla Sofferenza e dalla paura di morire oltre che dalla necessità contemporanea di individuare strategie autonome per affrontarle. Nel libro vengono individuati e commentati i nodi dell'instancabile ricerca condotta da Leopardi sul significato della "realtà" , sulla potenza del linguaggio immaginato, espresso, o di quelli trasferiti dalla etnologia, dalla storia; impliciti nelle relazioni, nella meditazione, nella spiritualità, nella salvifica propensione alla solidarietà universale. Ciò che, pian piano, appare sempre più chiaramente delineato è il come i cambiamenti che hanno connotato nel tempo le condizioni fisiche, psicologiche, esistenziali e sociali di Leopardi seguano un andamento coerente. Il libro sviluppa un metodo di indagine multidisciplinare per comprendere la pragmatica di detta "pedagogia". In particolare, essa diventa evidente all'interno della cornice di una "teoria dell'apprendimento" che – seguendo gli insegnamenti di Gregory Bateson – porta a individuare una dimensione "ecologica" della mente. Un ulteriore metodo d'indagine descritto nel libro rispetta lo schema che Zygmunt Bauman ha individuato utilmente delineando tre grandi "narrazioni" per affrontare la paura di morire, della fatale caducità della vita: la Strategia Eteronoma, la S. Eteronoma-Autonoma; la S. Autonoma. L'approccio germoglia nel libro con la proposta di una tesi inedita nell'ambito della critica leopardiana. Si sostiene che, ciò che rende ammirabile e paradigmatica la vicenda di Leopardi è che il nostro apprende e consolida progressi-vamente attitudini che evocano l'idea di "saggezza" . Si tratta di esperienze, sentimenti, disturbi di salute, illusioni, riflessioni, relazioni umane, amori, picchi di esasperazione, di amara ironia o barlumi di compiacimento. In questa situazione emergono inusitate capacità che in Leopardi culminano in una condizione di relativa imperturbabilità, di immersione nella "fenomenologia del reale" , nella proiezione programmatica assegnata a quella che lui stesso chiama "ultrafilosofia" e che viene qui esaltata per la sua natura "salvifica". Lo scenario è ravvivato dal colore giallo intenso della Ginestra, dal suo profumo dolce e gradevole ed è qui che cresce la speranza. Il "pessimismo della ragione" leopardiano non è ripiegato su di sé, mentre l'unica via d'uscita per l'umanità si appalesa – tra le righe de La Ginestra – nella solidarietà profonda con l'intero universo. Questa percezione del "comune" , della "reciprocità" , della potenza creativa della "solidarietà" diventa il motore che in Leopardi spinge ad appropriarsi di qualcosa che suona come un sereno giudizio armonizzato nel contesto, come una meditazione sul "vuoto" e sulle illusioni che è anche capacità di raggiungere una condizione di imperturbabilità e di astensione dal giudizio. Leopardi, con il suo linguaggio e la sua vicenda umana ci offre un caso di studio istruttivo e coinvolgente allo scopo di sviluppare una strategia autonoma per affrontare la sofferenza e la paura della morte.

Social Orders and Social Landscapes marks a new direction in research for Eurasian archaeology that focuses on how people lived in their local environment and interacted with their near and distant neighbours, rather than on overarching comparisons of archaeological culture complexes. Stemming from the 2005 University of Chicago Eurasian Archaeology Conference, the papers collected here reflect this new research agenda, though the way in which each author addressed the theme of the conference, and thus the book, was strikingly varied. This diversity arises out of the field’s intellectual flux driven by the principled engagement of the rich analytical traditions of the Soviet/CIS, Anglo-American, and European schools. Despite the variability in approaches and subject matter, several key themes emerged: 1) the reinterpretation culture categories by examining particular aspects of social life; 2) the role social memory plays in the production of landscape and place; 3) the influence of the built environment on societies; and 4) the ways in which economic considerations affect social orders and landscapes. The result is a book that helps to re-image Eurasia as a complex landscape fragmented by historically contingent and shifting ecological and social boundaries rather than a bounded mosaic of culture areas or environmental zones. “Scholarly research on Eurasia was transformed by the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Entire areas and fields of research became accessible to European and American scholars for the first time, resulting in the emergence of new centers specializing in primary field investigations throughout the vast, politically transformed landmass of Eurasia. One such center is the University of Chicago that has recently sponsored two large international conferences on Eurasian archaeology. Social Orders and Social Landscapes is the product of the second Chicago conference held in spring 2005. The editors of the volume should be proud of their efforts that have resulted in such a broad ranging and prompt publication. The articles encompass a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including archaeology, history, art history, palynology, and zooarchaeology; extend chronologically from Neolithic and Bronze Age times to the formation of national identity in Turkey in the early 20th century; and range geographically from Europe to China. Several articles reconstruct basic subsistence activities; others analyze distinctive settlement types and political and cultural frontiers, including the assimilation and emergence of new, self-defined ethnic groups and the selective adoption of new systems of religious belief. What unites this diverse collection is their consistent emphasis on the social construction of reality and the production of social landscapes and memories that altered perceptions of the physical world and mediated the practical activities that here have been convincingly reconstructed from the archaeological record. In so doing, rigid stereotypes are questioned and novel interpretations persuasively advanced. Early Bronze Age pastoralism on the south Russian steppes did not consist exclusively of herding animals nor was it combined, as it was later in the Iron Age, with the pursuit of agriculture; rather, D. Anthony and D. Brown suggest that at least in the Samara river valley the herding of animals occurred along side the intensive gathering of wild, nutritionally rich plants. The kalas of ancient Chorasmia are not cities, nor even proto-urban formations, but rather are large, heavily fortified enclosures meant to repel attacks of armed nomadic cavalry. They represent a continuation of a distinct Central Asian settlement pattern that began in the Bronze Age and that formed the center of a landscape divided into contiguous, self-contained oases. The Mongols not only herded livestock, but also farmed, fished, hunted, and traded throughout the vast area that they had conquered, uniting most of Eurasia into a single, economically integrated system. This volume describes the construction of the territorial identity of the southern end of South America and analyzes the cartographic territorialization of Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and the “Terra Australis” continent. Different spatial representations and territorial nature coexisted in this process as a result of the spatial interpretation and value modes as well as the projects and strategies of various actors. The book discusses the formal and symbolic incorporation to the Spanish dominion and its inclusion in the imperial design built over a new image of the world. Examining Jesuit cartography it considers both the indigenous territoriality and the dynamics of relations between natural and social components in the continental hinterland. The process of cartographic differentiation for this southern Atlantic region is analyzed in the framework of early Antarctic exploration and competing use of navigation routes and maritime resources. The book emphasizes the role geopolitical and economic interests play in these developments. The formation of territorialities of various origins has particular contents and logic, which are built upon imaginary subordination to political and economic interests. Cartographic language in the 19th century, associated with political and commercial motivations and the (British) imperial ideology, stimulated the territorial expansion. The book argues why in the late 1800's this was an important factor in the integration process of the southern indigenous territories and the national territoriality.
