The dynamics of immigration, international commerce and the postcolonial world make it inevitable that much translation is done into a second language, despite the prevailing wisdom that translators should only work into their mother tongue. This book is the first study to explore the phenomenon of translation into a second language in a way that will interest applied linguists, translators and translation teachers, and ESOL teachers working with advanced level students. Rather than seeing translation into a second language as deficient output, this study adopts an interlanguage framework to consider L2 translation as the product of developing competence; learning to translate is seen as a special variety of second language acquisition. Through carefully worked case studies, separate components of translation competence are identified, among them the ability to create stylistically authentic texts in English, the ability to monitor and edit output, and the psychological attitudes that the translator brings to the task. While the case studies mainly deal with Arabic speakers undergoing translator training in Australia, the conclusions will have implications for translation into a second language, especially English, around the world. Translation into the Second Language is firmly grounded in empirical research, and in this regard it serves as a stimulus and a methodological guide for further research. It will be a valuable addition for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students of applied linguistics, translation theory, bilingualism and second language acquisition as well as those involved in teaching or practicing translation at a professional level.

The Land of Cockayne is an impactful Italian fiction based on the passion for gambling and the sinful effect of the national lottery in Naples on all the classes of society. The lottery proves to be fun but ultimately a curse for the Marquis of Formosa, Gaetano, the glove-maker, Carmela, the factory girl, and her bold lover Raffaele. Cesare, a rich pastry maker, loses everything he has in the hope of obtaining money from the lottery for a new journey. The Marquis is a wreck and is ready to sacrifice his weak daughter, Lady Bianca, to his awful passion. A medium he and his friends take advice from about gambling makes him believe that Bianca's virtue may call on the spirits to indicate the lucky numbers. The Marquis ruins her health and happiness, trying to push the powerless, frail girl to see ghosts. The novel covers many significant events that follow in a way that will move the reader. The story presents incredibly the details on Naples, its people, and their never-ending desire to get rich through gambling, no matter the consequences.

He makes you laugh, though you can never be quite sure why. He's affable enough, of course, but it's not so much that. He is both a kind of halfwit and a genius, flippant and profound, chaotic and yet possessed of a Zen-like calm. He's easily distracted but tends to hound-dog every thought until he has it by the throat. His conversation is labyrinthine but he is capable of moments of blinding lucidity. The thing is, you can't help but love him. He is Vincenzo Malinconico, an underemployed lawyer whose wife has sort of left him ("he's the kind of man you marry not once but twice, and leave both times"), whose teenage children worry him to death, and whose profession mostly consists in appearing as if he has one. In this sequel to I Hadn't Understood, a Neapolitan mafia boss has been kidnapped by a mild-mannered computer engineer who holds the camorrista responsible for the accidental death of his son. The engineer plans to conduct an impromptu trial on live television during which he will list the various crimes of the accused, sentencing him before a captivated national audience and executing him accordingly. The standoff between law enforcement officers and the kidnapper becomes a tragi-comic reality show. The only hope of a happy ending rests with Vincenzo Malinconico, Neapolitan lawyer, poster-child for the proverbial mid-life crisis, and inveterate flâneur. He hardly has a reputation for decisiveness, but now is called upon to play a decisive role in resolving this drama in course with, hopefully, no loss of life, his own included.
