«Quale autore potrà mai dire come e perché un personaggio gli sia nato nella fantasia?». La domanda che si pone Pirandello trova nei suoi scritti una risposta inequivocabile: un’opera d’arte è il parto della fantasia nella quale si è inserito un germe vitale pronto a crescere per avere vita propria. E a fecondare la fantasia, “servetta sveltissima” e “un po’ dispettosa e beffarda”, è sempre un’emozione, un’“emozione feconda” per l’appunto. Il sintagma, fortemente espressivo, da cui questo volume prende le mosse, è utilizzato dall’autore in molte occasioni e sempre in riferimento al mistero della creazione artistica. Ovviamente, un simile problema si intreccia, all’interno dell’intera opera pirandelliana, con una gamma molto vasta di tematiche connesse capaci di muoversi dall’essenza stessa dell’arte di Pirandello, ovvero la definizione di umorismo, fino alla sperimentazione trasversale dei generi e dei codici artistici, vale a dire il continuo travaso di idee e la costante autoreferenzialità. Tenendo conto soprattutto di queste due prospettive i saggi qui raccolti propongono una lettura di alcune delle più significative opere pirandelliane che presentano questo intreccio di problematiche tese a svelare, fin dove l’autore lo permette, il mistero della sua creazione artistica.

This book explores Darwinism in modern Italian literature. In the years between Italy’s unification (1861) and the rise of fascism, many writers gave voice to anxieties connected with the ideas of evolution and progress. This study shows how Italian authors borrowed and reworked a scientific vocabulary to write about the contradictions and the contrasting tensions of Italy’s cultural and political-economic modernization. It focuses, above all, on novels by Italo Svevo, Federico De Roberto and Luigi Pirandello. The analysis centers on such topics as the struggle against adverse social conditions in capitalistic society, the risk of failing to survive the struggle itself, the adaptive issues of individuals uprooted from their family and work environments, the concerns about the heredity of maladapted characters. Accordingly, the book also argues that the hybridization and variation of both narrative forms and collective mindsets describes the modernist awareness of the cultural complexity experienced in Italy and Europe at this time.

Come avviene la creazione artistica? Qual è la sua genesi? Quali le sue condizioni? Attraverso il particolare itinerario artistico del catalano Antoni Tàpies (Barcellona, 1923 – 2012), lo psicanalista Massimo Recalcati esplora la natura del gesto creativo, riflettendo in particolare sulla dialettica che si crea tra biografia e opera, memoria e oblio, necessità e contingenza, ripetizione e creazione. Recalcati rilegge l’opera pittorica del grande maestro catalano con un approccio che intreccia psicanalisi e storia dell’arte. L’autore non intende offrire una visione panoramica della vasta produzione di Tàpies, né una ricostruzione filologica delle influenze e dei dibattiti artistici che hanno condizionato il suo lavoro; è, piuttosto, interessato al «segreto fondamentale di Tàpies, ovvero al modo singolare attraverso il quale egli accede a uno stile divenuto inconfondibile». Sul sottile confine che esiste tra libertà della creazione e necessità del reale si colloca quello che lo psicanalista individua come il paradigma-Tàpies, la cui ricerca contorna ripetutamente il segreto della sua stessa biografia, rinviando così l’opera alla vita e la vita all’opera in una forma inattesa. Nella lettura di Recalcati, infatti, il pittore catalano ha inscritto nel nome – Tàpies nella lingua catalana significa «muro» – il suo destino, che a sua volta si imprime in modo indelebile nelle opere: le grandi tele monocrome si presentano come veri e propri muri coperti da incisioni, segni, impronte. In questo caso, «la biografia non spiega l’opera, ma è divenuta opera. Non c’è prima la biografia e poi l’opera, ma l’opera che diventa biografia, l’opera che dà una forma nuova alla vita stessa dell’artista».
