Fascist and colonial legacies have been determinant in shaping how Italian colonialism has been narrated in Italy till the late 1960s. This book deals with the complex problem of public memory and discursive amnesia. The detailed research that underpins this book makes it no longer possible to claim that after 1945 there was an absolute and traumatic silence concerning Italy's colonial occupation of North and East Africa. However, the abiding public use of this history confirms the existence of an extremely selective and codified memory of that past. The author shows that colonial discourse persisted in historiography, newspapers, newsreels and film. Popular culture appears intertwined with political and economic interests and the power inscribed in elite and scientific knowledge. While readdressing the often mistaken historical time line that ignores that actual Italian colonial ties did not end with the fall of Fascism, but in 1960 with Somalia becoming independent, this book suggests that a new post Fascist Italian identity was the crucial issue in reappraisals of a national colonial past.

Le immagini costituiscono l’ambiente culturale nel quale viviamo: ci circondano, ci sorprendono, ci disgustano, ci seducono e siamo noi che, molto spesso, le diffondiamo attraverso i moderni sistemi di comunicazione e la rete. L’immagine ci pone davanti a una responsabilità: guardandola, non dobbiamo né invalidarla, né credere di poterci vedere tutto. Vedere, molto spesso, non equivale a capire. Il semplice atto di osservare inibisce, blocca, contrasta con la possibilità di andare oltre la superficie per ricercare un senso più profondo. Un’analisi che parte da lontano, dalla mimesis - concetto fondante dell’estetica platonica - fino ad arrivare ai giorni nostri. La filosofia di Walter Benjamin e le riflessioni di Georges Didi-Huberman sono alla base di questo saggio, che tenta di reinterpretare - alla luce delle scottanti questioni che caratterizzano il nostro millennio - le questioni poste da due studiosi. Il fondamentalismo islamico e il modo in cui esso utilizza le immagini, la censura operata nei confronti delle terribili fotografie scattate nel marzo 2003 nella prigione di Abu Ghraib, sono solo alcuni degli spunti di riflessione. L’immagine fotografica è il centro nevralgico intorno a cui ruota un’altra questione scottante: che rapporto intrattiene la fotografia con il reale? L’avvento del digitale e la conseguente possibilità di manipolazione dell’immagine, cosa ha comportato? E se osservare e capire le immagini volesse dire agire con pazienza per scovare quel punto contraddittorio di adesione e distacco dal reale in cui l’immagine continua a bruciare?
