In Dante's Journey to Polyphony, Francesco Ciabattoni's erudite analysis sheds light on Dante's use of music in the Divine Comedy. Ever since its completion in the fourteenth century, Dante's great epic poem Divina Commedia has been adapted in a wide variety of musical forms by composers across the world. Drawing on primary research in sources and recordings and on interviews with contemporary composers, Maria Roglieri provides here an introductory survey to the types of musical adaptation that the Commedia has attracted, including symphonies, chamber pieces, operas and ballets.Three categories of adaptation are examined: adaptations of the entire poem, works that focus on a particular character, and pieces which adapt an individual passage from the poem. Roglieri offers some possible motivations for the composer's choice of a particular passage or character, and examines the ways in which these choices influence the musical form of adaptation. Common characteristics between works are also identified.Dante and Music is an important springboard for future scholarship on the relationship between music in Dante, and Dante in music. Dealing with the interconnections between music and the written word, this volume brings into focus an updated range of analytical and interpretative approaches which transcend the domain of formalist paradigms and the purist assumption of music’s non-referentiality. Grouped into three thematic sections, these fifteen essays by Italian, British and American scholars shed light on a phenomenological network embracing different historical, socio-cultural and genre contexts and a variety of theoretical concepts, such as intermediality, the soundscape notion, and musicalisation. At one end of the spectrum, music emerges as a driving cultural force, an agent cooperating with signifying and communication processes and an element functionally woven into the discursive fabric of the literary work. Una riflessione del tutto inedita sull’entità e la qualità della consapevolezza musicale degli italiani lungo tutto il Novecento, che va oltre le limitazioni di “genere” e abbraccia una definizione il più ampia possibile di “cultura”: si prende in considerazione infatti non solo il “sapere” musicale strettamente inteso, dunque, ma - allargandosi su una declinazione di campo culturale più aggiornata dal punto di vista teoretico e storiografico – ogni tipo di esperienza che può configurarsi come pratica culturale. Le grandi direttrici di ricerca individuate sono tre: 1) la formazione musicale all’interno dei percorsi educativi istituzionali e i percorsi formativi non istituzionali; 2) le pratiche musicali non professionali e partecipative (dilettantismo, associazionismo, usi sociali della musica); 3) la fruizione collettiva e individuale di musica, con particolare accento sul ruolo svolto dai mezzi di comunicazione di massa lungo il corso del Novecento. Dai Conservatori alle bande di paese ai cori amatoriali, dalla programmazione dei teatri e delle istituzioni musicali alle trasmissioni radiofoniche e televisive e all'editoria musicale, fino alla musica in rete, un itinerario completo e aggiornato nella vasta gamma di interessi e manifestazioni che percorrono il nostro Paese.
