La storia del rapporto tra Voltaire e l'ingombrante eredità di Shakespeare che, con il suo genio, pose fine alla tradizione del mondo classico e all'egemonia culturale francese, annunciò il Romanticismo e aprì alla modernità. Un capitolo affascinante della storia della cultura europea. Voltaire è stato il primo grande intellettuale in senso moderno: l'autore più letto, criticato, discusso ed emulato del suo secolo. Grande ammiratore degli inglesi, della loro libertà di pensiero e delle loro istituzioni, giovane esule, tra il 1724 e il 1728, nei teatri di Londra scoprì Shakespeare, allora in Francia del tutto sconosciuto, e contribuì alla diffusione della sua fama in tutta Europa. Solo pochi decenni dopo però – in concomitanza con la guerra dei Sette anni (1756-1763) vinta dagli inglesi – il successo del poeta inglese in Europa crebbe a dismisura, mettendo in crisi la tragedia, il ruolo della Francia nel mondo e, quindi, lo stesso Voltaire, la cui cultura significava regole, norme, principi e, soprattutto, buon gusto. Shakespeare, invece, che trascendeva i limiti aristocratici, metteva in scena non eroi ma uomini moderni, con un linguaggio ora ricercato ora triviale, unendo tragico e comico, alto e basso, divenne emblema del genio. Pur riconosciuto come il teorico della tolleranza, Voltaire vide vacillare il suo mondo e attaccò il poeta inglese, che considerava un barbaro e il cui sorprendente successo gli parve, a un secolo e mezzo dalla morte, uno scandalo intollerabile. Ma sapeva, dal punto di vista letterario e teatrale, di essere ormai uno sconfitto.

This book substantiates two claims. First, the modern world was not simply produced by "objective" factors, rooted in geographical discoveries and scientific inventions, to be traced to economic, technological or political factors, but is the outcome of social, cultural and spiritual processes. Among such factors, beyond the Protestant ethic (Max Weber), the rise of the absolutist state and its disciplinary network (Michel Foucault), or court society (Norbert Elias), a prime role is played by theatre. The modern reality is deeply theatricalized. Second, a special access for studying this theatricalized world is offered by novels. The best classical novels not simply can be interpreted as describing a world "like" the theatre, but they capture and present a world that has become thoroughly transformed into a global theatre. The theatre effectively transformed the world, and classical novels effectively analyze this "theatricalized" reality – much better than the main instruments supposedly destined to study reality, philosophy and sociology. Thus, instead of using the technique of sociology to analyze novels, the book will treat novels as a "royal road" to analyze a theatricalized reality, in order to find our way back to a genuine and meaningful life.

In the light of globalization's failure provide the universal panacea expected by some of its more enthusiastic proponents, and the current status of neo-liberalism in Europe, a search has begun for alternative visions of the future; alternatives to the free market and to rampant capitalism. Indeed, although these alternatives may not be conceived of in terms of being a 'perfect order', there does appear to be a trend towards 'utopian thinking', as people - including scholars and intellectuals - search for inspiration and visions of better futures. If, as this search continues, it transpires that politics has little to offer, then what might social theory have to contribute to the imagination of these futures? Does social theory matter at all? What resources can it offer this project of rethinking the future? Without being tied to any single political platform, Utopia: Social Theory and the Future explores some of these questions, offering a timely and sustained attempt to make social theory relevant through explorations of its resources and possibilities for utopian imaginations. It is often claimed that utopian thought has no legitimate place whatsoever in sociological thinking, yet utopianism has remained part and parcel of social theory for centuries.
