In spite of the general phobia of federalism, there is a strong federalist trend within British political culture. In three very different historical contexts, federalism inspired the action of political movements such as the Imperial Federation League, the Round Table and the Federal Union. Indeed, it was regarded as the solution to problems arising from the first signs of the possible collapse of Great Britain and its Empire. The Round Table Movement played a particularly interesting role in this regard, attempting to reverse the rapid and inexorable decline of the British Empire. It was a political organisation with roots in all the major peripheries of the Empire and almost unlimited financial resources. This volume discusses the strategies and means employed by the group in order to maintain the British Empire’s global prominence. The book’s main argument is that we did not have a “British century” – the nineteenth – and an “American century” – the twentieth – but, rather, four centuries of Anglo–Saxon supremacy, which witnessed the affirmation of the national principle – expression of the Continental political tradition – and its overcoming through its opposite, the federal principle, the expression of the insular political tradition.

La crisi economica mondiale ha posto l'Unione europea di fronte alla più importante crisi della sua storia, una crisi che è insieme economica, demografica, ecologica, politica e istituzionale. E che vede proprio l'Unione trascinata sul banco degli imputati, accusata di aver portato alla debolezza dell'euro, di aver provocato la recessione imponendo l'austerità, di aver marginalizzato l'azione politica. Oggi molti guardano all'Europa unita con scetticismo e non sono pochi quelli che predicano un ritorno agli Stati-Nazione. Ma è davvero questa la via d'uscita dalla crisi? Daniel Cohn-Bendit e Guy Verhofstadt, due profondi conoscitori dell'Unione europea e dei complessi meccanismi delle sue istituzioni, sono convinti di no. Anzi: i problemi che attualmente affliggono il Vecchio Continente (crisi economica, immigrazione dai paesi del Terzo Mondo, disoccupazione, depauperamento delle risorse) potranno trovare una soluzione soltanto attraverso il potenziamento del progetto di integrazione e l'adozione di un modello federale, retto da istituzioni sovranazionali che facciano capo a un Parlamento europeo. A chi pensa che sia stato l'euro ad aver mandato in rovina il bilancio delle famiglie, gli autori rispondono che, al contrario, l'unione monetaria rappresenta la nostra unica possibilità per uscire dall'inevitabile declino degli Stati europei nel contesto dell'economia mondiale, trainata dalle potenze emergenti, come Cina, India, Brasile, Russia, Messico. A chi si sente minacciato dagli stranieri che premono alle frontiere rispondono che non sarà certo arroccandosi all'interno dei confini nazionali che si riuscirà ad arginare il movimento dei popoli e invitano a guardare alla culla della creatività e dell'ingegnosità, al paese per eccellenza dell'immigrazione, gli Stati Uniti. Infine, in un tempo in cui la mondializzazione minaccia sempre di più la salute del pianeta, l'Europa rappresenta lo spazio politico più adatto a svolgere una funzione di protezione, coniugando ecologismo e occupazione attraverso la promozione di una «green economy» che investa tutti gli ambiti produttivi. Cohn-Bendit e Verhofstadt scrivono un manifesto coraggioso e appassionato, esortandoci a lottare contro la letargia e l'indifferenza che uccidono le nostre istituzioni, a prendere parte attiva nella scelta del nostro futuro: «Opponiamoci. Battiamoci contro i nazionalisti, i conservatori e i populisti. Mostriamo loro le conseguenze drammatiche della sparizione dell'Unione europea. Osiamo pensare europeo».
