Sacred Nature: Animism and Materiality in Ancient Religions is the second volume of the series Material Religion in Antiquity (MaReA). The book collects the proceedings of the international online workshop carrying the same title organized by CAMNES, SoRS on 20–21 May 2021. Sacred Nature brings together the perspectives of scholars from different disciplines (archaeology, anthropology, iconography, philology, history of religions) about the notions of nature, sacredness, animism and materiality in ancient religions of the Old and the New World. The contributions highlight various ways of understandings the relationships that occurred between human beings, animals, plants, rivers, deities and the land in the religious life of ancient societies. In particular, each chapter explores entangled aspects of the perception of nature and its other-than-human inhabitants, and contributes to readdress some notions about nature, personhood/agency, divinity/sacrality, and materiality/spirituality in ancient religions and cosmologies. In this line, the book seeks to promote a starkly inter-disciplinary and religious-anthropological approach to the definition of ‘sacred nature’, especially engaging with the analytical category of animism as a fruitful conceptual tool for the investigation of human-environmental relations in the ancient religious conceptions, representations and practices. Temples are the most prestigious buildings in the urban landscape of ancient Italy, emerging within a network of centres of the then-known Mediterranean world. Notwithstanding the fragmentary condition of the buildings’ remains, these monuments – and especially their richly decorated roofs – are crucial sources of information on the constitution of political, social and craft identities, acting as agents in displaying the meaning of images. The subject of this volume is thematic and includes material from the Eastern Mediterranean (including Greece and Turkey). Contributors discuss the network between patron elites and specialized craft communities that were responsible for the sophisticated terracotta decoration of temples in Italy between 600 and 100 BC, focusing on the mobility of craft people and craft traditions and techniques, asking how images, iconographies, practices and materials can be used to explain the organization of ancient production, distribution and consumption. Special attention has been given to relations with the Eastern Mediterranean (Greece and Anatolia). Investigating craft communities, workshop organizations and networks has never been thoroughly undertaken for this period and region, nor for this exceptionally rich category of materials, or for the craftspeople producing the architectural terracottas. Papers in this volume aim to improve our understanding of roof production and construction in this period, to reveal relationships between main production centres, and to study the possible influences of immigrant craftspeople.

Il rischio in cui si può incorrere, nell'introdurre un evento culturale, è quello di sconfinare nella retorica o, peggio, nella polemica: succede a chi ama, vive e si bea della cultura e assiste quotidianamente, impotente, al degrado di essa e al qualunquismo delle governance che si alternano alla guida del Paese. L'art. 9 della Costituzione inserisce, fra i dodici principi fondamentali della Repubblica, la promozione e lo sviluppo della cultura. L'art. 1, co. 1, del “Codice Urbani” – la legge che regolamenta il settore dei Beni Culturali e del Paesaggio – affida alla Repubblica la tutela e la valorizzazione del patrimonio culturale. E gli Italiani – per la precisione il 68,3% – ritengono che il patrimonio culturale sia la principale forza identitaria dell'Italia nel mondo e punto di partenza per il rilancio del Paese (Indagine Censis “Ripartire dalla bellezza”, 26/01/2012). Se a questo si aggiunge l'equazione “patrimonio nascosto = nessun patrimonio” e l'idea che un patrimonio conosciuto da pochi serve a poco – concetti ormai assimilati da tutti – viene da chiedersi perché non si fa di questa Nazione un enorme museo a cielo aperto, valorizzando i siti archeologici, i musei, città d'arte e le incredibili bellezze paesaggistiche di cui siamo stati beneficiati. È un discorso lungo, cui non c'è risposta. Ancora vige la convinzione che un reperto archeologico diventi prezioso essenzialmente perché gli viene attribuito un valore venale, perché oggetto di mercato. O di mercimonio. E cosí sono sempre le Soprintendenze e le Forze dell'Ordine a fare miracoli quotidiani, chi per riportare alla luce, dai sedimenti del passato, siti ed oggetti che rappresentano la memoria storica di questo Paese, chi per strappare dalle mani avide di gente senza scrupolo reperti che parlano al mondo di noi, di questo piccolo lembo di terra, ricovero di tesori d'inestimabile valore – naturali o antropici – fin dall'alba dell'uomo. Per questo si è voluto organizzare un'esposizione per portare all'attenzione degli abitanti di Ladispoli e dei turisti i risultati dell'attività di scavo, da parte della S.B.A.E.M. (Soprintendenza Beni Archeologici dell'Etruria Meridionale), e di repressione degli illeciti e recupero del nostro patrimonio archeologico dal vergognoso mercato clandestino di opere d'arte da parte del Gruppo Tutela Patrimonio Archeologico della Guardia di Finanza. Talvolta un contributo rilevante a quest'opera di conservazione e recupero viene fornito da alcuni Enti locali, come il Comune di Ladispoli, guidato da un Sindaco amante sincero della cultura e da un'Amministrazione determinata a fare di questo centro balneare alle porte di Roma un luogo ove si pratica una forma di turismo in cui la cultura recita un ruolo trainante. Consapevoli di appartenere ad un territorio di primario valore scientifico, il cui impatto fu determinante su tutto lo sviluppo della cultura del Paese, a partire dall'età Eneolitica. Un evento nel quale mostrare cosa c'è sotto i nostri piedi e cosa stava per essere portato via per sempre. E che invece, grazie alla Soprintendenza dell'Etruria Meridionale e alla Guardia di Finanza, torna alla fruizione pubblica: magari per sempre, magari solo per un periodo limitato di tempo. E si è scelto, come filo conduttore, il simposio, un rito antichissimo, collegato al consumo del vino e che ha attraversato trasversalmente tutte le civiltà antiche del Mediterraneo, sia pur nella diversità degli usi, ma nel comune intento di favorire la socializzazione, la comunicazione fra gli uomini, il confronto delle opinioni. La diversa capacità di arricchire il proprio bagaglio di conoscenze: questo, sí, l'unico vero e reale elemento discriminante fra gli uomini di tutte le epoche. FABRIZIO L. In questo libro si ripercorre la vallata del Marecchia, indagando dapprima il ritrovamento ottocentesco di armi ed oggetti bronzei occultati nei "ripostigli" di Casalecchio di Verucchio, poi di idoletti, ovvero piccole sculture di bronzo raffiguranti divinità, scoperte a partire dalle pendici della collina riminese di Covignano, come il Marte oggi al Museo di Cleveland, fino alle località, apparentemente più impervie per gli antichi, del Montefeltro: Sant'Igne, Pennabilli, Scavolino, Carpegna e Sestino. In questo itinerario, scandito cronologicamente fra l'età villanoviana e la preromana, si mostrano relazioni politiche, cultuali e commerciali che, attraverso le vie marittime dell'Adriatico, aprono il Montefeltro non solo all’area padana, ma anche alla frequentazione di Etruschi, di Piceni e addirittura di Greci del Peloponneso. L'autore Cristina Ravara Montebelli, archeologa di professione, organizzatrice di mostre e convegni. Da anni è impegnata in ricerche d’archivio riguardanti l’archeologia, il collezionismo e la storia del riminese nel XIX secolo. Ha partecipato in qualità di ricercatrice ai Progetti Europei ROMIT, ADRIAS, B.A.R.C.A, come relatrice a Convegni nazionali e internazionali, in veste di docente a seminari universitari ed a varie edizioni della International Summer School “Mediterraneo” dell’Università di Bologna (2007-2009). E' cultore della materia (Topografia antica) presso il Dipartimento Beni Culturali, Università di Bologna, Campus di Ravenna.
