The Natural History Museum of the University of Florence, founded in 1775 by Grand-Duke Pietro Leopold, is the oldest scientific museum in Europe. With this second volume on the Botanical Collection, Florence University Press continues its series dedicated to the six Sections of the Museum. The first part of the volume recounts the birth of botanical sciences in Florence and the history of the museum collections from sixteenth century to today. Then follows the second part which describes the historical and modern Herbaria, for each of which the main events that went to their formation, the importance of the plants they contain and biographical information on those who built the collections are described. The third section expounds the other collections in the Botanical Section of the Museum, among which of particular interest are the wax models of plants and fruits, manufactured by the old Grand-ducal Ceroplastics Laboratory, the wood collection, plaster of Paris mushrooms and the eighteenth century still life paintings of fruits and vegetables by Bartolomeo Bimbi. Finally, the last part illustrates the importance that herbaria play today in modern scientific research, drawing attention to the fact that they are an archive that holds taxonomical, chorological and ecological information in function of the plants they contain, as well as historical-biographical information on the scholars who, through their efforts, built up the collections.

The production of this book has been made possible by the collaboration of a number of scholars and the generosity of the Arezzo Provincial Authority. It provides detailed descriptions of the contents of precious botanical collections amassed by natives of Arezzo, or simply conserved in institutions situated within the territory. The book provides an overview of both herbals of dried plants and painted herbals from the sixteenth century up to the present, starting from the one created in 1563 by the Arezzo doctor Andrea Cesalpino. The first herbal in the world to be organised through systematic criteria, this collection is now in the Botanical Section of the Florence University Museum of Natural History, together with another small eighteenth-century herbal produced by a pharmacist from Cortona, Agostino Coltellini. Conserved in Cortona itself is another eighteenth-century herbal, this one painted by Mattia Moneti, while in Castiglion Fiorentino and Poppi respectively are the intriguing collections of the Hortus siccus pisanus (18th century) and of the Biblioteca Rilliana (late 17th century). Also described in the book is a herbal from the Convent of La Verna (18th century) and the Egyptian herbal of Jacob Corinaldi (19th century), conserved in Montevarchi. Finally there are also the modern herbals, illustrating the continuity over time of a practice that is the foundation of all systematic study. The book is in fact rounded off by an anastatic reprint of the description of the Cesalpino herbal published in 1858, which is still a seminal work for studies such as those contained in this collection.

Questo libro nasce dal desiderio di mettere a conoscenza di un vasto pubblico una storia poco nota, anzi, quasi del tutto sconosciuta, quella del Museo Coloniale di Roma. Le vicende del Museo Coloniale di Roma, come chiarisce il nome stesso che dà il titolo al volume, rendono testimonianza di una fase storica nella quale, dopo l’unificazione dell’Italia, l’azione di promozione coloniale veniva svolta da diversi enti pubblici e privati: musei e associazioni geografiche, africanistiche e coloniali, dislocati in tutto il territorio nazionale. Emblematica in questo senso fu l’attività del Museo Coloniale di Roma. Il sottotitolo, Fra le zebre nel paese dell’olio di ricino, è tratto da un articolo che «Il Popolo d’Italia» pubblicò il 4 novembre 1923, e vuole esprimere quel confine tra il formale e l’informale che permette di narrare il passato senza indulgere troppo in una specialistica e burocratica divulgazione scientifica. C’è anche un motivo pratico, che si riannoda ai fili della storia. La pianta del Ricinus communis, esposta alla Mostra triennale delle terre italiane d’oltremare del 1940, era considerata dal regime una pianta dal valore autarchico, per via delle sue molteplici utilizzazioni nell’industria tessile, farmaceutica, cosmetica e nella produzione del lubrificante per gli aerei militari, oltre ad essere nota per l’olio di ricino, impiegato come strumento di tortura. Le zebre alludono alla liaison tra storia, natura ed esotismo. Il continente africano simboleggia ancor oggi un ‘altrove’ e la zebra incarna l’altrove dell’Africa che, da semplice cornice imperiale, è diventata oggi un paradosso di contraddizioni. Il Museo Coloniale custodiva in passato circa dodicimila oggetti e un tesoro, il Tesoro archeologico della Libia, trasferito in Italia nel 1942 dall’ex soprintendente reggente della Libia Gennaro Pesce. Dopo quasi settant’anni di silenzio, la storia di questo tesoro torna di nuovo alla ribalta e si intreccia con la guerra civile in Libia. Il 25 maggio 2011, dal caveau della Banca Nazionale Commerciale di Bengasi viene rubato il tesoro archeologico di Bengasi che, con ogni probabilità, è lo stesso Tesoro archeologico della Libia messo al sicuro da Gennaro Pesce. La sua sorte è ancor oggi un ‘mistero’, ma il mistero che circonda questo e altri tesori archeologici altro non è che l’assenza di notizie e testimonianze certe. Tra rigore scientifico e una scrittura comunicativa, a volte ironica e amara, si svolge in queste pagine l’appassionante storia della nascita e del declino di un museo e dei suoi ‘tesori’, sconosciuti ai più. Un museo che si propone come metafora patriottica di un periodo della storia d’Italia scomodo e pieno di contraddizioni, ma proprio per questo degno di essere indagato in ogni suo aspetto, perché soltanto in questo modo si possono aprire sentieri di ricerca alternativi, come quelli che si prospettano in questo libro. Francesca Gandolfo È archeologa e lavora a Roma presso la Direzione Generale per il Paesaggio, le Belle Arti, l’Architettura e l’Arte Contemporanee del Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali e del Turismo. Archeologa pre-protostorica vicino e medio-orientale, specializzatasi nello studio dei tessuti protostorici, è esperta di etnoarcheologia dell’abbigliamento, dei tessuti e dei gioielli antichi e di tradizione. È curatrice di eventi espositivi in Italia e all’estero. Ha studiato al Centre de Recherches Archéologiques del CNRS di Parigi. Ha condotto ricerche e scavi in Italia, nel Vicino e Medio Oriente, negli Emirati Arabi Uniti e in Kuweit. È stata professore a contratto all’Università di Firenze. È autrice di numerosi saggi e pubblicazioni in opere collettive. Ha scritto Realtà e mito nei costumi tradizionali e popolari del Piemonte e della Valle d’Aosta (Priuli & Verlucca, Ivrea 1997).
