Perché il misterioso abate Sauniére di Rennes Le Chateau si è procurato proprio la riproduzione del quadro L’incoronazione di Celestino? Fonti storiche ci informano che Pietro del Morrone – il futuro Celestino V – quando si recò a Lione nel 1274, in occasione del Concilio indetto da Gregorio X, fu ospitato dai Templari nella magione poi divenuta suo convento (che nel 1800 fu abbattuta per realizzare il Teatro dei Celestini, così si chiama oggi il teatro di Lione). Di ritorno l’eremita si fermò a Collemaggio, alle porte della città dell’Aquila, e la Vergine in sogno gli disse di realizzare una chiesa in suo onore in un luogo già sacro. In questa stessa chiesa, nel 1310 si svolse il processo aquilano ai Templari. Potrebbero allora i Templari aver affidato il loro tesoro a Pietro del Morrone che lo ha custodito in quel prezioso scrigno che è Santa Maria di Collemaggio, costruita dall’eremita proprio con il loro aiuto? Può la fantasia creare la realtà? Può la realtà confondersi con la dimensione del sogno dove tutto è possibile? Al sogno e all’invenzione immaginifica è dedicata la prima parte di quest’avvincente libro di Maria Grazia Lopardi, un breve romanzo in cui realtà, intuizione e fantasia vanno a braccetto. Ad essa si contrappone la seconda parte dell’opera, nella quale, invece, dati storici e riscontri sul campo portano all’attenzione del lettore le scoperte dell’Autrice sull’affascinante Santa Maria di Collemaggio e una cronaca di eventi personali lascia intravedere che quelle che normalmente chiamiamo coincidenze, tali non sono.

Quello della Lopardi è un viaggio non affidato alla mente razionale, perciò non si sviluppa secondo logica, seguendo il filo di un ragionamento verso la conclusione, ma piuttosto procede in modo non lineare, guidato dall’intuizione, da una guida interiore. Il lettore è invitato a compiere, insieme all’Autrice, delle esplorazioni alla ricerca di una verità che avrà valore solo quando interiormente diverrà la Verità. Maria Grazia Lopardi, infatti, non cerca di ricondurre il tutto a una costruzione organica e compatta, ma lascia tracciato il percorso delle sue intuizioni, tra una ricerca e l’altra, delle svolte che coincidenze straordinarie hanno dato alla sua vita. A volte si è trattato di piccole, ripetute banalità che sono assurte al ruolo di coincidenze significative, suggerimenti di una sorgente interiore di conoscenza, come quando le è sembrato palese cosa sia il Graal e da dove derivi questa parola che nei secoli ha indicato l’irraggiungibile meta di ogni cercatore del divino. Scrive l’Autrice: “Credo di aver compreso cosa sia il Graal, cosa si celi dietro il mito della cerca, senza con questo avere la presunzione di averlo conquistato! Gaal, enigmatica parola, simbolo della perfezione, dominio del mito, tesoro da conquistare entrato nel linguaggio silenzioso della dottrina esoterica che, secondo la definizione di Aristotele, viene appresa molto prima di essere capita perché è comunicazione autentica che non necessita di comprensione. Una nuova intuizione mi si sta palesando e ne cerco la verifica nella Tradizione iniziatica, nella conoscenza appannaggio di popoli e culture diverse, unificante come lo è la Verità. È possibile scrivere qualcosa di nuovo sul Graal? Forse sì se quella che stiamo vivendo è l’epoca in cui tutto sarà svelato. E, in fondo, del Graal non sappiamo nulla”.

The monastery of Monte Cassino, founded by St. Benedict in the sixth century, was the cradle of Western monasticism. It became one of the vital centers of culture and learning in Europe. At the height of its influence, in the eleventh and early twelfth centuries, two of its abbots (including Desiderius) and one of its monks became popes, and it controlled a vast network of dependencies--churches, monasteries, villages, and farms--especially in central and southern Italy. Herbert Bloch's study, the product of forty years of research, takes as its starting point the twelfth-century bronze doors of the basilica of the abbey, the most significant relic of the medieval structure. The panels of these doors are inscribed with a list of more than 180 of the abbey's possessions. Mr. Bloch has supplemented this roster with lists found in papal and imperial privileges and other documents. The heart of the book is a detailed investigation of the nearly 700 dependencies of Monte Cassino from the sixth to the twelfth century and beyond. No comparable study of this or any other great medieval institution has ever before been undertaken. Ironically, it was the bombing of 1944, which destroyed the monastery, that led to an unexpected revelation: the discovery, on the reverse side of some panels of the doors, of magnificent engraved figures of patriarchs and apostles. These proved to be remnants of the church portal ordered from Constantinople by Desiderius in the eleventh century, which marked the beginning of the grandiose reconstruction of the abbey and its church, the latter to become a model for many other churches. In order to solve the riddle of the doors of Monte Cassino, Bloch has investigated other bronze doors of Byzantine origin in Italy and the doors of the great Italian master Oderisius of Benevento, as well as those of S. Clemente a Casauria and of the cathedral of Benevento. Also included is a study of the political and cultural impact of Byzantium on Monte Cassino and a chapter on Constantinus Africanus, Saracen turned monk, one of the most interesting figures in the history of medieval medicine. The text is sumptuously illustrated with 193 plates; most of the more than 300 illustrations have never before been published. This three-volume work, with its nine detailed indexes, offers a wealth of information for scholars in many different fields.
