Bilanci partecipativi, giurie di cittadini, sondaggi deliberativi, town meeting sono solo alcuni dei nuovi strumenti per la partecipazione politica che si sono ampiamente diffusi nel corso degli ultimi venti anni in molte democrazie occidentali. Attraverso tali tecniche si vuole includere i cittadini 'ordinari' nella formulazione delle scelte pubbliche, nell'ipotesi che ciò possa consentire di costruire decisioni di qualità migliore e di promuovere tanto processi di empowerment della cittadinanza, quanto una redistribuzione del potere decisionale. In realtà però gli impatti delle nuove forme di partecipazione sui contenuti delle decisioni pubbliche appaiono deboli o, quantomeno, incerti. Ma allora come spiegare questa crescente offerta istituzionale di partecipazione? Perché le nuove pratiche partecipative continuano a diffondersi rapidamente nonostante la loro capacità di influenzare le politiche sia ancora tutta da dimostrare? La tesi sostenuta nel volume è che la partecipazione si sia diffusa non per la sua capacità di democratizzare i processi decisionali, come affermato in molta letteratura recente, ma al contrario perché contribuisce, insieme a tanti altri fattori, alla stabilizzazione e riproduzione del neoliberismo, favorendo il contenimento dei suoi costi economici e sociali e delle sue contraddizioni politiche. Muovendo da un'analisi storica e sistemica del rapporto tra le nuove forme di partecipazione e il processo di neoliberalizzazione delle forme e dei contenuti dell'azione pubblica - nella quale si ricostruisce non solo quando e dove la partecipazione e il neoliberismo si sono storicamente intrecciati, ma anche perché e soprattutto come tale intreccio è avvenuto - il testo propone le coordinate interpretative di una sociologia critica della partecipazione.--
