Il samurai, leggendaria figura di guerriero sospesa tra mito e realtà, esercita da sempre un grande fascino che è giunto immutato fino a noi. Ma qual è la sua vera essenza e in che cosa consiste la sua modernità, ancora oggi fonte d'insegnamento nella vita quotidiana, nell'etica e nella politica? A questi interrogativi tenta di dare una risposta Leonardo Vittorio Arena, studioso di religioni e filosofie orientali, in un testo che mescola saggio e narrazione, ricostruzione storica e riflessione filosofica. Il samurai viene analizzato in una duplice prospettiva, culturale e bellica. Ispirandosi al pensiero di Sunzi, secondo cui non si può combattere senza una strategia, né si può vincere senza avvalersi della teoria, i samurai coltivano l'arte (nelle sue molteplici manifestazioni) e la lotta come discipline distinte ma complementari. Come lo yin e lo yang, esse rappresentano due facce della stessa realtà, entrambe necessarie e ugualmente importanti. La lettura dei classici della letteratura e della poesia giapponese, la meditazione filosofica e religiosa, la scrittura di versi sono esercizio sterile se separato dalla vita, dall'azione guerresca, e quest'ultima diventa senza scopo e destinata alla sconfitta se privata della conoscenza. La via maestra per un vero samurai è, dunque, quella del pennello e della spada. Sulla base di questo concetto, l'autore approfondisce vari aspetti che caratterizzano la figura del samurai: il complesso rapporto con le donne, l'ambiguità sessuale, il modo polivalente di concepire il sacro, "frequentando " varie religioni, fra cui il cristianesimo, senza aderire a nessuna in particolare, l'influsso esercitato dallo zen, e il ruolo determinante della morte. Per il samurai la vita e la morte sono infatti fogli di un unico libro, non ha senso prediligere una rispetto all'altra. Lo dimostra lo scrittore giapponese Yukio Mishima, da considerarsi un samurai "postmoderno", con il suo suicidio spettacolare. La morte pervade le arti marziali, le lettere invece la esorcizzano esaltando l'esuberanza vitale e assicurando gloria postuma e immortale. Occorre "mescolare i fiori che appassiscono con quelli imperituri" sentenzia Mishima. E come riuscirci, se non con la morte? Il seppuku, il suicidio rituale, è l'azione estrema in grado di conferire significato a ogni altro atto dell'esistenza. Il gesto sublime, inquietante e paradossale per noi occidentali, che il pennello e la spada del samurai tratteggiano per dare compimento all'opera d'arte che è la vita.
