The ten chapters collected in this book manifest the current global interest in trans-border dialogues and trace the origins and development of Italian and Bengali internationalisms in the period from the mid-19th to the early 20th century. Despite having differing political statuses and lacking a shared geographical or historical space, Bengal and Italy remained uniquely connected and, at times, actively sought to transcend different kinds of constraints in their search for a significant dialogue and mutual enrichment in the fields of literature, music, architecture, art, cinema, diplomacy, entrepreneurship, travels, education and intellectual engagement. In this context, the volume confronts strategies of evaluation adopted by prominent representatives of the Bengali and Italian cultural environments with particular emphasis on readings embedded in the moment of contact. Both regions benefitted from this ‘elective affinity’ as they advanced along their respective paths towards a fuller awareness of their specific identity, and thus set a positive example of transcultural understanding which may inspire today’s world.

Quando si parla di Buddhismo, si finisce molto spesso col dimenticare la varietà di significati storici che il termine possiede. Si dimentica che una cosa è il Buddhismo della prima predicazione, il Buddhismo del Buddha, una cosa diversa quello della sistemazione conciliare, con le sue esplosioni drammatiche, con le sue scissioni variegate, un'altra cosa ancora il Buddhismo delle sètte del Piccolo Veicolo, il quale quindi sarà perfino diverso in se stesso a seconda, almeno, delle grandi ramificazioni settarie, infine ancora un'altra cosa, anzi varie altre cose, il Buddhismo del Grande Veicolo con le sue analisi complesse, con la dissoluzione della logicità giudicativa che però non riesce a rinnegare, ma se mai riconferma, la necessità del sistema e dà per l'appunto luogo a più sistemi, fino a condurre a una nuova metafisicizzazione. E questa segnerà quella che possiamo chiamare la chiusura del circolo, nel senso che sancirà per via molto mediata il reincontro con la metafisica brahmanica, attraverso il ritorno del concetto di assolutezza dell'Origine. Ma da questo esito nel Buddhismo delle origini siamo molto, ma molto lontani.
