During the sixteenth century, antiquarian studies (the study of the material past, comprising modern archaeology, epigraphy, and numismatics) rose in Europe in parallel to the technical development of the printing press. Some humanists continued to prefer the manuscript form to disseminate their findings – as numerous fair copies of sylloges and treatises attest –, but slowly the printed medium grew in popularity, with its obvious advantages but also its many challenges. As antiquarian printed works appeared, the relationship between manuscript and printed sources also became less linear: printed copies of earlier works were annotated to serve as a means of research, and printed works could be copied by hand – partially or even completely. This book explores how antiquarian literature (collections of inscriptions, treatises, letters...) developed throughout the sixteenth century, both in manuscript and in print; how both media interacted with each other, and how these printed antiquarian works were received, as attested by the manuscript annotations left by their early modern owners and readers.

The Church of St. Polyeuktos is one of the most magnificent, but also most peculiar architectural achievements in Byzantine Constantinople. The accidental rediscovery of the building during construction work in Istanbul in the 1960s is legendary and considered one of the most sensational finds in Byzantine archaeology. Built by the aristocrat Lady Anicia Juliana, the reconstruction of the structure and the interpretation of its strange forms continue to challenge scholars today. The building gave rise to a whole series of archaeo-historical narratives, in which the City's byzantine protagonists and major monuments were woven into a coherent plot. This Element on the archaeology of St. Polyeuktos takes a closer look at these narratives and subject them to critical examination. Innerhalb der Forschung mangelt es immer noch an einer kritischen Neuauswertung der Arbeiten des Oratorianers und Kardinals Cesare Baronios sowie seiner kirchlichen Laufbahn innerhalb der römischen Kurie. Deshalb geht es in der hier dargelegten Untersuchung darum, eine vertiefte, auf die verfügbaren Quellen gestützte und die historischen Disziplinen sowie Methoden des 21. Jahrhunderts bündelnde Geschichte von Liturgie, Zeremoniell und Kirchenhistoriographie der katholischen Kirche während der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts vorzulegen. Das Konzil von Trient (1545–1563) schuf die Grundlagen für eine Reform, mit welcher die Kurie die liturgischen Bücher bearbeiten und mit Hilfe derselben ihre eigene Zeremonialkultur neu organisieren konnte. Auf diese Neufassung des Kurienzeremoniells zwischen den Pontifikaten Pius’ V. und Gregors’ XIII. soll der Schwerpunkt der Untersuchung gelegt werden, indem Kirchen-, Politik-, Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte zu einer Einheit verschmelzen. Der Beitrag Baronios steht in engstem, aber bisher noch kaum bemerktem Zusammenhang mit der Entstehung seiner zwölfbändigen "Annales Ecclesiastici", mit denen die katholische Kirchengeschichtsschreibung für Jahrhunderte gültige Referenztexte vorlegte.
