Trama La storia narra delle torture subite da un prigioniero dell'Inquisizione spagnola. Il narratore della storia è ritenuto responsabile di crimini non specificati e rinchiuso in una cella completamente buia. Nel tentativo di determinare le dimensioni della stanza e data la profonda quanto opprimente oscurità della stessa inciampa e cade riconoscendo di essere scampato ad una fine terribile, ovvero la caduta all'interno di un pozzo, collocato al centro della cella, dalla capacità sconosciuta. Perde nuovamente conoscenza risvegliandosi sdraiato su un basso telaio di legno, legato completamente dai piedi fino alla testa. Dopo molto tempo si rende conto che una grande lama tagliente a forma di pendolo è sospesa sopra di lui: il suo movimento sempre più rapido e inesorabile è tale da fargli presagire che presto sarà prossima a tagliarli il petto. Anche questa volta riesce a liberarsi, intingendo i legami che lo bloccano con della carne; dei topi affamati rosicchiano le corde che si spezzano un attimo prima che il pendolo gli trapassi il cuore. Ma i muri della prigione divengono incandescenti, cominciano a muoversi e a diventare a forma di rombo al fine di portarlo presso il pozzo situato al centro della struttura. Tuttavia la storia finisce con la salvezza del protagonista da parte dei francesi; il generale Lasalle, infatti, riesce a prendere il prigioniero un attimo prima che quest'ultimo cada nel pozzo.

Il racconto descrive l'angosciosa esperienza di un prigioniero dell'Inquisizione, intrappolato in una cella di tortura, che riflette sulla propria morte imminente e lotta per mantenere la propria sanità mentale e fisica. La narrazione inizia con il prigioniero che riprende conoscenza dopo essere stato stordito, solo per scoprire che è destinato a una morte certa e orribile. Attraverso una serie di dettagli macabri e immagini potenti, il racconto cattura il terrore crescente del prigioniero mentre cerca di capire e affrontare la propria situazione. La trama si sviluppa attraverso la lenta percezione del prigioniero delle torture che lo aspettano, inclusa la sinistra presenza di un pendolo con una lama affilata che oscilla sempre più vicino a lui.
