Il premio Strega ha settant'anni. È nato, nell'immediato dopoguerra, grazie all'amicizia tra il colto imprenditore Guido Alberti e la grande scrittrice Maria Bellonci, che credeva fosse importante inventare e realizzare un Premio come nessuno mai lo aveva immaginato. Un Premio affidato, come avrebbe detto lei, a "una giuria vasta e democratica", caratterizzata non tanto dal numero, quanto dalla varietà e vastità delle competenze. Non solo scrittori, professori e critici letterari, ma un più largo pubblico di giornalisti, imprenditori, registi, attori interessati alla letteratura, come un polmone prezioso per il respiro di una società democratica quale ci auguravamo di poter cominciare a costruire allora.Quanto ha contato il Premio nella vita culturale del Paese, anche in quella parte più profonda e meno visibile? Sulla parte più visibile non abbiamo dubbi e non è un gran merito: dipende dai giornali, dai mass media e dalle contingenze se è il più citato tra i moltissimi premi letterari italiani. Le critiche intorno al funzionamento dello Strega sono anche quelle moltissime. Ne abbiamo tenuto conto, abbiamo tentato di migliorarne l'organizzazione. Le critiche continuano, nondimeno, e noi speriamo che continuino per altri cento anni.Mi viene in mente quello che diceva Churchill sulla democrazia, che è la peggiore forma di governo eccezion fatta per tutte le altre sperimentate finora.
