Fra il 1923 e il 1929 Borges pubblica tre volumi di poesia su cui in seguito interverrà radicalmente, e tre di prosa che saranno ripudiati. Tutti gli altri scritti – dispersi per lo più in periodici e riviste – cui era affidata l’insolente riflessione di quegli anni verranno dimenticati. E si capisce: ansioso di giustificare una tumultuosa militanza ultraista, ma soprattutto di «disanchilosare l’arte» e di difendere la sua poesia, Borges dichiara la supremazia dell’«estetica attiva dei prismi», capace di forgiare una visione personale, sull’«estetica passiva degli specchi», che trasforma l’arte in copia; addita nel ritmo, elemento acustico, e nella metafora, elemento luminoso, gli strumenti imprescindibili di tale rivoluzione; regola impavido i conti con i morti e i loro esercizi di retorica; stigmatizza risolutamente il «nulla immobile» della letteratura coeva, preoccupata solo di cambiare di posto alle «cianfrusaglie ornamentali» che pretendono di discendere da Góngora e di «infilzare in quantità infinite i consunti aggettivi»; celebra una Buenos Aires che nelle «ore orfane che vivono come spaventate dagli altri e delle quali nessuno si cura» diventa libertà di poesia, ed esalta l’ultimo tango, «zolletta di zucchero che da sola addolcisce la città offuscata e molle». Anni spavaldi, certo, di fervori iconoclasti, ma che a ben vedere ci dischiudono il segreto lavorio da cui nascerà il più indimenticabile Borges, come appare evidente da questo passo del 1923: «le nostre nullità differiscono così poco, e così tanto influiscono le circostanze sulle anime, che è quasi una casualità che tu sia il leggente e io lo scrivente – il sospettoso e appassionato scrivente dei miei versi».
