«Il Rinascimento è un cambiamento di marea. E il passaggio dal medioevo all’età moderna deve essere visto non come una grande svolta, ma come una lunga serie di onde che vengono a frangersi sulla spiaggia: ciascuna si frange a una distanza diversa e in un momento diverso. Le linee di demarcazione fra vecchio e nuovo passano per punti sempre diversi; ogni forma di civiltà, ogni pensiero ricorre al suo momento, e la trasformazione non interessa mai tutto quanto il complesso della civiltà». L’idea di Rinascimento è uno dei concetti chiave su cui si è modellata l’identità culturale europea. Al solo pronunciarla, questa parola evoca ancora oggi, nel senso comune diffuso, il sogno di un’epoca «di porpora e d’oro», di un mondo immerso in un dolce chiarore. Individualismo, ritorno al classico e riscoperta dei suoi valori estetici, allentamento dei vincoli religiosi e senso della vita, nuova centralità del mondo e della natura: sembrano questi i suoi tratti essenziali, che una lunga tradizione di studi ha fissato nel tempo e che tuttora ci consegna. Ma è davvero così? «Leggere i saggi di Huizinga – scrive Gabriele Pedullà – è la migliore introduzione agli enormi problemi che un concetto fruttuoso, ma anche controverso come quello di Rinascimento ha posto e continua a porre agli studiosi». Il Rinascimento, infatti, è un concetto mutevole, caratterizzato, fin dalla sua prima definizione presso i contemporanei, da una larga oscillazione di significati, riguardo ai campi della sua applicazione, ai suoi termini cronologici e ai suoi ambiti geografici. Lo sviluppo stesso di questa parola, insomma, è una delle prove più lampanti del fatto che la storia non è una scienza indipendente, e che essa è legata da rapporti indissolubili con la vita stessa di un’epoca, il che rappresenta insieme la sua debolezza e la sua forza. Da Valla a Machiavelli e a Erasmo, da Vasari a Leonardo e a Galileo, e poi via via da Voltaire a Goethe, e da ultimo, nell’Ottocento, «secolo della storia», da Michelet a Burckhardt, l’interpretrazione del Rinascimento si sposta, fino a fissarsi alla fine, in modo schematico e semplificatorio, su una contrapposizione netta con l’intera storia precedente, con quel medioevo dei secoli bui che rischia di diventare, a confronto, un tutto indistinto e negativo. Ne segue, nota acutamente Huizinga, uno strano fenomeno di «predatazione» del Rinascimento medesimo: tutte le volte che, ben prima del fatidico crinale tra Quattro e Cinquecento, si presenta una qualche personalità in grado di esaltare i valori dell’individualismo, nella letteratura, nelle arti, nella scienza o nello stesso campo del rinnovamento religioso, ecco che questa personalità è rappresentata come «precorritrice», si tratti di Petrarca o di Dante, di Giotto o di Francesco d’Assisi. L’analisi di Huizinga suggerisce uno scenario più mosso, più articolato. Il Rinascimento è per il grande storico olandese un fenomeno fatto di sfumature, di mezze tinte; un’età di transizione che si dispone contraddittoriamente tra gli scenari dell’universo medievale e la faticosa, più lunga conquista della prospettiva del mondo moderno. Letto a distanza di quasi un secolo dalla sua stesura e a settant’anni dalla morte di Huizinga, questo saggio rappresenta un contributo incredibilmente attuale. Sfumata la visione di uno sviluppo storico a tutti i costi lineare e progressivo, l’idea di Rinascimento si ripresenta oggi come il banco di prova di una consapevolezza storica complessa, da rivisitare e da riconquistare. Ed è qui la grande lezione di questo splendido, piccolo libro.
