È uno strato dotato di uno spessore più o meno profondo dove, nel corso dei secoli, si sono accumulate una serie di tracce, memorie e materie, quindi il luogo dove ha preso forma, nel corso del tempo, l'attacco a terra del manufatto urbano. È dunque un elemento essenziale della forma urbana. È il luogo che nell'Ottocento ha avuto un ruolo cruciale nella modernizzazione della città accogliendo infrastrutture a rete e infrastrutture di trasporto e che oggi può assumere un ruolo importante nella definizione e nella riqualificazione dei paesaggi della città contemporanea. Ma è anche una materia finita e non riproducibile, a rischio di estinzione nei nostri iperurbanizzati paesaggi europei.

Partendo dall'analisi delle problematiche delle reti composte dalle infrastrutture stradali e ferroviarie che formano il tratto padano del Corridoio pan-europeo n. V, disteso tra Torino e Trieste, il libro indaga alcune peculiarità ambientali e territoriali del Nord Est italiano. In particolare esso riporta gli atti di un Convegno di approfondimento sul tema del sistema metropolitano lineare padano veneto, già delineato nella ricerca di preminente interesse nazionale intitolata Dalla città metropolitana al corridoio metropolitano: il caso del corridoio padano, con Coordinatore nazionale il prof. Roberto Busi, dell'Università degli studi di Brescia, i cui esiti sono riportati nel libro Una città di 500 Km. Letture del corridoio padano, edito da Gangemi nel 2011. I contributi del presente volume rappresentano pertanto un momento di riflessione interdisciplinare su alcune tra le principali problematiche sottese dal sistema degli insediamenti che si snodano, in una consequenzialità talvolta lineare, talaltra nodale, tra le Alpi e l'Adriatico. In particolare si è dato dapprima spazio alle considerazioni inerenti la fenomenologia sistemica del Li.Me.S (Linear metropolitan system), più prossime alle tematiche sottese alla ricerca PRIN citata, per creare un sostrato su cui innestare, poi, le riflessioni di studiosi di diverse discipline, onde favorire una lettura della stessa problematica metropolitana da più punti di vista. Nei vari testi, seppur con differenti angolazioni, il connubio tra infrastrutture, architettura, ambiente, paesaggio ed economia consente una rilettura dei fenomeni di trasformazione del sistema degli insediamenti dell'area di studio, secondo visioni originali e non date, che se da un lato corona gli sforzi dell'unità locale di ricerca dell'Università degli studi di Udine, dall'altro alimenta nuove possibilità di ricerca interdisciplinare su un tema di per sé vastissimo e di grande attualità.
