The significance of Plato’s literary style to the content of his ideas is perhaps one of the central problems in the study of Plato and Ancient Philosophy as a whole. As Samuel Scolnicov points out in this collection, many other philosophers have employed literary techniques to express their ideas, just as many literary authors have exemplified philosophical ideas in their narratives, but for no other philosopher does the mode of expression play such a vital role in their thought as it does for Plato. And yet, even after two thousand years there is still no consensus about why Plato expresses his ideas in this distinctive style. Selected from the first Latin American Area meeting of the International Plato Society (www.platosociety.org) in Brazil in 2012, the following collection of essays presents some of the most recent scholarship from around the world on the wide range of issues related to Plato’s dialogue form. La natura dialettica e drammatica del pensiero di Platone si rivela pienamente nel Protagora, il più teatrale fra i suoi dialoghi. Il significato dell’opera emerge da un’indagine che muove dalla forma, con uno sforzo teso a ricostruire gli orizzonti d’attesa di un pubblico espertissimo di teatro. Simile a un eroe comico, Socrate varca la soglia della famigerata casa di Callia, munifico ospite dei sofisti; gli appare un aldilà bizzarro, riecheggiante i mondi avversi che l’eroe aristofaneo era chiamato a esplorare e combattere. Ma questo aldilà si colora di sfumature che preludono all’ontologia matura di Platone: è il mondo della polis, formato da larve dotate di una empeiria elusiva, che sfugge alle prese del sapere oggettivo. Oltre quella soglia, Socrate trova insomma la caverna di Platone, teatrino di ombre in cui tuttavia il filosofo ha il dovere di combattere come meglio può. Ecco dunque un Socrate odissiaco e pugnace, in lotta con un avversario disposto a negare i presupposti stessi della dialettica. Il motivo del duello verbale (agon logon) era centrale tanto nella commedia antica quanto nelle esibizioni pubbliche dei sofisti. Con un occhio alle Nuvole, Platone fonde queste due tradizioni in una mirabile unità drammatica, che incarna nel vivo dell’azione la minaccia mortale rappresentata da Protagora, il cui pensiero appare irriducibile alla prospettiva socratico-platonica.
