Il 9 novembre 1938, dopo l’assassinio a Parigi del consigliere d’ambasciata von Rath, Goebbels scatena per rappresaglia in Germania un violento pogrom antiebraico passato tristemente alla storia come Notte dei Cristalli. Centinaia di ebrei vengono uccisi, migliaia arrestati, centinaia di sinagoghe distrutte e migliaia i cristalli dei negozi infranti. Qualche mese dopo, per tacitare le proteste che si levano dal mondo intero, ma soprattutto per mere ragioni di propaganda, Adolf Hitler autorizza gli ebrei che ne fanno richiesta a lasciare la Germania. Il 13 marzo 1939, ad Amburgo, la Saint Louis, una nave battente bandiera nazista, molla le ancore. A bordo, 937 passeggeri, di cui 550 donne e bambini. Sono tutti ebrei tedeschi. Tutti muniti di visto. Tutti con una destinazione: L’Avana, dove sperano di soggiornare prima di ricevere il permesso d’entrata negli Stati Uniti. Il 23 maggio, poco prima che la nave entri nelle acque territoriali cubane, il comandante della Saint Louis, Gustav Schröder, riceve un messaggio dal governo cubano: ALLA FONDA IN RADA STOP NON REITERARE NÈ TENTARE DI AVVICINARSI AL PORTO. Successivamente gli viene ordinato di ritornare indietro con destinazione Amburgo. Schröder conosce il destino tragico che attende i passeggeri al rientro in Germania. Decide perciò di rivolgersi ai paesi del «mondo libero» e di chiedere accoglienza per i suoi passeggeri. Roosevelt, il primo sollecitato, rifiuta. Il Canada rifiuta. Tutte le nazioni dell’America latina rifiutano. A Berlino, Goebbels esulta: Nessuno li vuole! Comincia così la terribile vicenda della Saint Louis, una nave lasciata alla deriva nell’Oceano. Basandosi sui documenti d’archivio e sulle testimonianze dei sopravvissuti, Gilbert Sinoué ricostruisce ora per ora questa epopea, così agghiacciante da sembrare inconcepibile.

The Jews of Pitigliano, Tuscany, enjoyed almost equal rights with the Christians under the counts of Orsini. When the county passed to the Medici, the Jews became prey to the same anti-Jewish measures as in all of Tuscany: enclosure in a ghetto (1622), the yellow badge, segregation from Christians, and compulsory sermons. Under the house of Lorena, beginning in 1765, their situation improved, as well as under the French occupation (1799) and the Restoration, when they achieved emancipation. A Jewish question was "reinvented" by the fascists in 1938: most of Pitigliano's Jews emigrated; a few were deported to Fossoli and Auschwitz in April-June 1944.
