Processing The Past written by Francis X. Blouin Jr. and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-18 with History categories.

Processing the Past explores the dramatic changes taking place in historical understanding and archival management, and hence the relations between historians and archivists. Written by an archivist and a historian, it shows how these changes have been brought on by new historical thinking, new conceptions of archives, changing notions of historical authority, modifications in archival practices, and new information technologies. The book takes an "archival turn" by situating archives as subjects rather than places of study, and examining the increasingly problematic relationships between historical and archival work. By showing how nineteenth- and early twentieth-century historians and archivists in Europe and North America came to occupy the same conceptual and methodological space, the book sets the background to these changes. In the past, authoritative history was based on authoritative archives and mutual understandings of scientific research. These connections changed as historians began to ask questions not easily answered by traditional documentation, and archivists began to confront an unmanageable increase in the amount of material they processed and the challenges of new electronic technologies. The authors contend that historians and archivists have divided into two entirely separate professions with distinct conceptual frameworks, training, and purposes, as well as different understandings of the authorities that govern their work. Processing the Past moves toward bridging this divide by speaking in one voice to these very different audiences. Blouin and Rosenberg conclude by raising the worrisome question of what future historical archives might be like if historical scholars and archivists no longer understand each other, and indeed, whether their now different notions of what is archival and historical will ever again be joined.

Peachin, M. Roman Imperial Titulature and Chronology, A.D. 235-284. 1989 This study is a basic work of reference for the history of the Roman Empire during the midthird century A.D. The book consists of two principal parts. Part two, upon which the first is based, is a catalogue that lists all known variants of the titulature of each emperor from this period. In turn, each variant is accompanied by a list of all attestations (including coins, inscriptions, papyri) of that formula. An introduction traces briefly the historical development of the official titular formula, and then discusses the method of granting this formula at the beginning of the period in question. The introduction is followed by a chapter that evaluates the source material. Given a secure basic understanding of how the ancient testimonia are to be employed, the book then progresses to a chapter that sets out a complete chronology for the period. SA 29 (1989), 543 p. Cloth. 21x28 cm. - 118.00 EURO, ISBN: 9050630340

Collegia Centonariorum written by Jinyu Liu and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Architecture categories.

The collegia centonariorum were often seen as the municipal fire-brigades or status groups of sorts in the Roman cities. Through a close investigation of the chronological development and geographical distribution of the collegia centonariorum, their legal privileges, and the prosopographical data of members and patrons, this volume reveals a much more complex picture of their origins, characters and compositions in various regions from the first century BC to the fourth century AD. Intricately connected with the textile economy, the collegia centonariorum illustrate how elements as diverse as material demand from the military and the city of Rome, legal infrastructure, urban development, and organizations of urban-based craftsmen and tradesmen may have interfaced with each other in the Roman world.

Slow Reading In A Hurried Age written by David Mikics and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

Wrapped in the glow of the computer or phone screen, we cruise websites; we skim and skip. We glance for a brief moment at whatever catches our eye and then move on. Slow Reading in a Hurried Age reminds us of another mode of reading--the kind that requires our full attention and that has as its goal not the mere gathering of information but the deeper understanding that only good books can offer. Slow Reading in a Hurried Age is a practical guide for anyone who yearns for a more meaningful and satisfying reading experience, and who wants to sharpen reading skills and improve concentration. David Mikics, a noted literary scholar, demonstrates exactly how the tried-and-true methods of slow reading can provide a more immersive, fulfilling experience. He begins with fourteen preliminary rules for slow reading and shows us how to apply them. The rules are followed by excursions into key genres, including short stories, novels, poems, plays, and essays. Reading, Mikics says, should not be drudgery, and not mere escape either, but a way to live life at a higher pitch. A good book is a pathway to finding ourselves, by getting lost in the words and works of others.
