Così, nel maggio 1959, Ferruccio Parri si rivolgeva a un giovane di ventitré anni, non ancora laureato: quel giovane era Giampaolo Pansa. In questo libro il giornalista racconta la sua avventura umana e intellettuale, nata nel segno della nonna, Caterina Zaffiro vedova Pansa, che con il suo fastidio per comunisti, democristiani e fascisti è stata, senza saperlo, un esempio di revisionismo anarchico imposto dalla povertà. Dalle stregonerie di nonna Caterina si passa all'infanzia nella guerra civile. Giampaolo aveva otto anni, e con la memoria dei bambini ha fotografato quel tempo: i partigiani fucilati, i fascisti ammazzati, ma anche le ragazze che ballavano nude ai festini dei tedeschi e poi alle baldorie degli americani. Il destino di Pansa si compie quando, dopo le mille pagine della tesi sulla guerra partigiana tra Genova e il Po, viene assunto alla "Stampa". Decenni di lavoro nei grandi giornali, di incontri con i big politici e i direttori famosi, che l'autore narra nei loro lati nascosti: Giulio De Benedetti, Italo Pietra, Alberto Ronchey, Piero Ottone, Eugenio Scalfari e Claudio Rinaldi. A colpire sono i personaggi inattesi: Gianna, la fascista rapata dai partigiani, la saggezza di Borghese, comandante della X Mas, Almirante dagli occhi magnetici, il doppio Fortebraccio dell'"Unità". Ma a dominare è il maledetto Pansa. Inviso alla sinistra ottusa per i suoi libri sulla guerra civile e amato da chi ha infranto il silenzio imposto dai vincitori. Ecco un settantenne che ci dà un libro scritto con la schiettezza allegra del giovane spaccavetri di un tempo. GIAMPAOLO PANSA, nato a Casale Monferrato nel 1935, scrive per "Il Riformista". Ha pubblicato numerosi saggi e romanzi di grande successo. Tra questi ricordiamo: Il sangue dei vinti, La Grande Bugia, I Gendarmi della Memoria e I tre inverni della paura.

This book adds to this growing body of scholarship on the Italian Resistance by analysing, for the first time, how the 'three wars' are represented over the broad spectrum of Resistance culture from 1945 to the present day. Furthermore, it makes this contribution to scholarship by bridging the gap between historical and cultural analysis. Whereas historians frequently use literary texts in their writings, they are often flawed by an insufficiently nuanced understanding of what a literary text is. In recent years the agenda of how to ‘deal with the past’ has become a central dimension of the quality of contemporary democracies. Many years after the process of authoritarian breakdown, consolidated democracies revisit the past either symbolically or to punish the elites associated with the previous authoritarian regimes. New factors, like international environment, conditionality, party cleavages, memory cycles and commemorations or politics of apologies, do sometimes bring the past back into the political arena. This book addresses such themes by dealing with two dimensions of authoritarian legacies in Southern European democracies: repressive institutions and human rights abuses. The thrust of this book is that we should view transitional justice as part of a broader ‘politics of the past’: an ongoing process in which elites and society under democratic rule revise the meaning of the past in terms of what they hope to achieve in the present. This book was published as a special issue of South European Society and Politics.
