Solo così la loro nazione potrà espandere pacificamente la sua influenza liberandosi dai conflitti che premono ai suoi confini. In caso contrario, la resistenza globale colpirà anche la crescita economica cinese, scatenando una pericolosa instabilità. Edward N. Luttwak racconta in questo libro il presente e il futuro di una terra ancora misteriosa ma ormai centrale per le sorti del mondo. "Non guardo a questo Paese e alla sua gente da osservatore distaccato, ma da persona che ne condivide speranze e preoccupazioni" scrive. Tra queste ultime, la principale è la rotta di collisione tra una Cina resa incauta dalla crescita apparentemente inarrestabile e un'America pronta all'uso della forza per difendere i propri interessi strategici.
