Giacomo Casanova, Cavaliere di Seingalt, giunto a cinquantatré anni, ormai stanco di avventure erotiche e di traffici politici, sente sempre più forte il bisogno di ritornare nella sua città, Venezia, da cui tanti anni prima era fuggito con la sua mirabolante evasione dai Piombi. Ma, proprio quando la meta è vicina, il destino gli fa incontrare la giovanissima Marcolina, non ancora ventenne eppure dotta studiosa di matematiche superiori e lucida illuminista. Questa donna, che lo guarda con una freddezza che Casanova mai prima aveva visto in uno sguardo femminile, lo costringe a gettarsi perdutamente in un intrigo rovinoso. E, proprio in quell’avventura, gli balena l’immagine di una felicità incomparabile, che vince di sorpresa la sua cinica sapienza: un’immagine che gli si mostra per negarsi poi subito e abbandonarlo, come un’ultima beffarda apparizione della vita. Arthur Schnitzler, il magistrale evocatore della Vienna leggera e crudele degli ultimi anni absburgici, rivela in questo breve romanzo, che è forse la sua opera più segreta e personale, tutta la sua chiaroveggenza psicologica – quella per cui Freud gli scrisse che temeva di incontrarlo in quanto riconosceva in lui il suo Doppio. Una trama maliziosa, che potrebbe apparire di sfuggita in un capitolo delle "Memorie" di Casanova, si dilata qui in un feroce scontro fra Amore e Morte, che viene a porre un sigillo sinistro su questa tappa della carriera di un libertino, ormai segnata dall’angoscia della fine. Come nell’"Andreas" di Hofmannsthal, il décor settecentesco, che Schnitzler ricostruisce con sovrana eleganza, accoglie in una luce d’autunno, nitida e sensuale, un teatro di maschere dietro cui si intravede un mondo di quasi insostenibile dolcezza e crudeltà, quale doveva apparire, in uno sguardo di congedo, al limpido occhio nichilistico dello Schnitzler maturo. E tale è la forza e la precisione musicale del racconto che, senza bisogno che vengano additati, vi affiorano naturalmente i suoi temi: l’impossibilità di ogni ritorno e di ogni unione con se stessi, la lotta con il proprio Doppio, la certezza che il principe degli ingannatori è anche il primo degli ingannati, infine che l’inganno è l’unica forma in cui la vita si offre. "Il ritorno di Casanova" è apparso per la prima volta nel 1918.

Ma proprio durante il viaggio verso la città natale si imbatte in Marcolina, giovanissima studiosa di matematica e lucida illuminista, che nei suoi confronti altro non mostra se non distaccata e indifferente cortesia. Lo spirito da conquistatore, solo apparentemente sopito, del vecchio Casanova si risveglia e spingerà il protagonista ad architettare un rovinoso intrigo, che dopo un barlume di incomparabile felicità lascerà sulle sue labbra solo un amaro retrogusto. La persona che si aggira solitaria per le strade buie di una Venezia fatiscente e ostile non è che il fantasma del superbo e audace avventuriero che era stato in quel Settecento brillante e rivoluzionario. L'originalità dell'opera schnitzleriana consiste nello svolgimento dell'idea di solitudine, che coincide con la decadenza fisica e morale del personaggio di Casanova e diventa emblema, per lo scrittore, per i suoi colleghi austriaci e per tutti i suoi lettori, anche della grave crisi politica e bellica della prima guerra mondiale. Ecco dunque che l'autore, come per una sorta di rispecchiamento, costruisce un ritratto del tutto crepuscolare dell'impenitente conquistatore veneziano, che viene descritto al tramonto della sua vita di avventuriero e seduttore. Disenthralling Ourselves portrays contemporary Israel in a process of transition. Jewish-Israeli and Palestinian-Israeli communities share a nation-state divided by the separate truths of its conflicting fundamental narratives. This book considers ways of converting those separate and antagonistic narratives from fuel for conflict to seeds of change. Its purpose is to undo the convenient coherence of collective memory and master narratives through fostering a capacious moral imagination able to apprehend diverse, even contentious, stories and truths. Contemporary Israel functions as a case study in an in-depth and interdisciplinary exploration of conflict resolution, viewing Jewish-Israeli and Palestinian-Israeli docpostwar Italian and European cinema it is much less known--especially outside of Italy--that such success has much to do with the writings of his fifteen-year collaborator and scriptwriter, Ennio Flaiano (1910-72), journalist, novelist, dramatist, and theater and film critic. This book identifies the ways in which Flaiano's distinctive travel diary--satirically registering the transformative journey from provincial Italian to global citizen--captured and shaped the changing tastes of an entire generation of Italians on the film set, in the newspaper office, and on the street. The book highlights Flaiano's uneven yet steadily developing anticolonialist stance, his emerging postmodern autobiography, and his interrogation of notions of regional, national and cultural superiority.
