"I promessi sposi" sono il maggior romanzo italiano. Opera di un trentenne appassionato, stabilisce la nascita della nuova lingua italiana. Manzoni iniziò a dedicarsi alla scrittura di un romanzo a partire dall'autunno del 1821, ma la stesura vera e propria del "Fermo e Lucia" era iniziata il 24 aprile 1821, dopo aver letto l'"Ivanhoe" tradotto in francese. Manzoni iniziò a scrivere il suo romanzo dopo aver quindi iniziato la lettura dei romanzi europei, specialmente inglesi, in quanto la letteratura italiana si era concentrata su altre tipologie di generi prosaici. Oltre a Walter Scott Manzoni, seguendo la metodologia già adottata per le tragedie, cominciò un vero e proprio lavoro di documentazione storica, basato sulla lettura della "Historia patria" di Giuseppe Ripamonti e dell'"Economia e statistica" di Melchiorre Gioia. In base alle postille lasciate dal Manzoni, la prima minuta del "Fermo e Lucia" consisteva in un foglio protocollo diviso in due colonne: a sinistra Manzoni scriveva il testo, mentre sulla destra riportava le correzioni.La seconda fase di stesura del romanzo terminò il 17 novembre 1823 e il manoscritto fu edito nel 1825. Il passaggio dal "Fermo e Lucia" ai "Promessi Sposi" fu alquanto travagliato per la ridefinizione dell'architettura dell'opera. Oltre al problema espositivo, Manzoni si accorse del linguaggio artificioso e letterario da lui usato, elemento non rispondente alle esigenze realistiche cui tendeva la sua poesia. Scegliendo il toscano come lingua colloquiale per i suoi personaggi, pubblicò la cosiddetta "ventisettana" (nome dato alla prima edizione dei "Promessi Sposi") ma, consapevole della necessità di ascoltare direttamente l'eloquio di quella regione, decise di partire per Firenze.
