Populism is a category which is often abused in current public discourse. It is an issue that is usually looked at from the perspective of political science or cultural studies, while historians have rarely confronted it. Nonetheless, the study of historical cases of populism is a necessary preliminary task for an in-depth examination of the topic. This book opens up a channel of dialogue among political scientists, sociologists, philosophers and historians in order to launch a debate on the declination of the populist phenomenon. The essays here consist of the reflections of various scholars on several national cases through a survey conducted on a large temporal and spatial horizon, from the experiences developed in Eastern Europe at the end of the nineteenth century to the more recent events of Ukraine’s revolution at the end of the twentieth; and from the first case of a populist party in the US to the examples of the Italian political scenario in the 1980s, in order to identify which historical perspective would be the most suitable for understanding populism and if populism can actually be considered a category that fits into the historical investigation of these phenomena.

"Tutto ciò che resterà della mia vita è quello che ho scritto." Qualcuno l'ha detto pensando a se stesso, però sono parole che si adattano anche a me. Ho sempre voluto scrivere. Alla fine della scuola media, andavo per i tredici anni, mio padre Ernesto mi regalò una macchina Underwood di seconda mano, dicendo: "Vedi un po' se la sai usare". Mia madre Giovanna mi mandò a una scuola di dattilografia. Ma dopo un paio di lezioni, chi la dirigeva le spiegò: "Giampaolo ha imparato subito quanto gli serve. Non butti via i suoi soldi". Ho cominciato a scrivere nell'estate del 1948 e da allora non ho più smesso. Nell'ottobre 2015 di anni ne ho compiuti ottanta. E ho deciso che potevo permettermi questo libro. Non oso definirlo un'autobiografia, parola pomposa. Allora dirò che è il racconto personale di un vecchio ragazzo destinato a fare il giornalista. Non venivo da una famiglia di intellettuali. Mio padre era operaio del telegrafo. Mia madre aveva cominciato a lavorare a dieci anni ed era stata così brava da aprire un negozio di mode. La mia nonna paterna, Caterina, era analfabeta. Rimasta vedova con sei bambini da crescere, aveva vissuto nella miseria più nera. Troverete qui le loro storie, insieme a quelle di mio nonno Giovanni Eusebio, un bracciante strapelato, e di uno zio paterno, Paolo, un muratore morto a New York in un cantiere. I miei antenati sono questi. E se esiste un aldilà, guarderanno stupiti questo figlio che si è guadagnato il pane scrivendo. Ho lavorato in tanti giornali, un buon posto di vedetta per osservare l'Italia. L'ho narrata e la narro seguendo un'inclinazione che, nel passare degli anni, si è accentuata: quella del rompiscatole. Un signore che non gli va né di comandare né di obbedire. E cerca di vedere le cose con un occhio insolito. Inoltrandosi su terreni che nessuno voleva esplorare, come è accaduto per la guerra civile e il sangue dei vinti. Ho descritto tante Italie che cambiavano, ras politici trionfare e poi cadere, bande armate pronte a uccidere, terrorismi che nascevano e mutavano, per ultimo quello del Califfato islamico. Ho avuto spesso paura, ma in fondo ho vissuto e mi sono persino divertito. Spero che Il rompiscatole diverta anche quanti lo leggeranno. G.P.
