A vent'anni dalla prima edizione, con centinaia di migliaia di copie vendute, Il sangue dei vinti continua a parlare a tutti gli italiani di memoria negata, della resa dei conti che seguì ai giorni della Liberazione, delle pagine più oscure della Resistenza vittoriosa sui nazifascisti. Lo scriveva lo stesso Pansa nell'avvertenza alla prima edizione: voleva «spalancare una porta rimasta sbarrata per quasi sessant'anni». Un risultato raggiunto, che ha innescato un lungo percorso autoriale, il «ciclo dei vinti» che restituisce dignità alle vittime e agli sconfitti della guerra civile. Un percorso, d'altra parte, che avrà esiti divisivi per la società italiana e che segnerà profondamente lo stesso Pansa, attaccato su più fronti, e molto tenacemente dalla «sua» sinistra, per la scelta «revisionista» di raccontare, senza tabù ma con accortezza storiografica, misfatti, vendette, eccidi, rappresaglie compiute dai partigiani. Un'avventura editoriale che, come scrive Telese, ha fatto di Giampaolo Pansa un «Achab all'inseguimento della balena bianca della guerra civile». E solo la sua morte, nel 2020, «ha schiodato dall'albero maestro il doblone d'oro che Giampaolo aveva piantato, a martellate, esattamente vent'anni prima. Usando come chiodo il libro che oggi avete tra le mani».
