San Michele dai mille colori, dai ricchi mosaici pavimentali e dai raffinati rilievi policromi, che ornavano ogni angolo dell’edificio. Qui i re d’Italia venivano incoronati, qui si svolgevano i funerali dei potenti, perché l’antico psicopompo ne portasse l’anima verso il cielo: che importa se era l’Empireo, il Walhalla o il Paradiso? La leggenda d’un terribile terremoto, che avrebbe distrutto tutto, ha spinto gran parte degli studiosi e commentatori dell’ultimo secolo a datare la Basilica San Michele ad un’epoca “impossibile”: un ricco sacrario per incoronare i re, quando il regno non esisteva più! Dopo i contrasti con Berengario del Friuli, primo re franco-italico, il vescovo Liutfredo impegnò tutte le proprie energie per controllare il potere civile, a partire da una ricca cornice per le incoronazioni, per rendere evidente che la sacralità del re dipendeva da quella corona, che il vescovo gli poneva solennemente in capo. Era l’anno 950, poco prima o poco dopo… dallo scrigno policromo del San Michele di Pavia trassero ispirazione gli Abati benedettini di Cluny, per fondare una nuova architettura.
