L’indagine sull’origine della storia porta Umberto Galimberti a risalire ancora una volta ai Greci, prima fonte della nostra cultura. Se la storia, tuttavia, è “tempo fornito di senso”, allora i Greci, più che storici, furono “cronisti”. Kairos, ciclicità e piena consapevolezza della morte hanno fondato una temporalità senza storia. Quest’ultima appartiene infatti solo alla religione giudaico-cristiana, in quanto percorso di salvezza, basato su un “disegno sacro”, che unisce passato, presente e futuro. Il Cristianesimo accetta anche la tecnica, che è manipolazione della natura da parte dell’uomo che ne è il “padrone”, laddove per i Greci la natura è solo lo scenario immutabile in cui egli abita. In un confronto serrato che, attraversando il Medioevo, arriva ai giorni nostri, Galimberti riflette su quanto l’avvento del mercato e l’uso del denaro ci abbiano annullato come persone. Siamo di fronte al nichilismo e ai suoi sviluppi: è l’età della tecnica, dunque, a segnare la fine della storia e dell’Occidente come lo conosciamo.
