Rimasta di nuovo incinta, Saskia mette al mondo Titus, che sfuggirà alla maledizione che grava sulla famiglia van Rijn. Ma la catena di lutti non è finita perché la donna, minata dalla tubercolosi, si spegne a soli trent’anni. Su consiglio di Agneta, il pittore prende una balia per Titus, la giovane vedova Geertje. Fra i due si accende una passione, destinata a durare poco perché Rembrandt s’invaghisce presto di Hendrickje, una governante appena assunta. Per qualche tempo l’artista e le sue amanti daranno vita a un insolito ménage a trois. Agneta intanto continua a seguire da lontano le vicende di casa van Rijn e a nascondere un inquietante segreto che finirà per influire sulla vita del pittore e delle sue donne.

Maestro del disegno e autore de L’altra parte, uno dei romanzi chiave del Novecento, Alfred Kubin ha saputo esplorare l’incerto confine tra le inquietudini del reale e il magmatico abisso dell’inconscio. Gli scritti che presentiamo in questa raccolta, composti tra il 1921 e il 1949 e finora mai tradotti in italiano, riguardano la creazione artistica e l’esperienza onirica, due temi che per Kubin non possono essere trattati separatamente; precisando, tuttavia, che per creazione artistica s’intende soprattutto la pratica intima e “povera” del disegno, mentre lo stato onirico sconfina nella veglia, divenendo attitudine dello sguardo e del sentire. La scrittura che ne scaturisce è divisa tra nitore e un’inafferrabile qualità allucinatoria, che avvolge i diversi argomenti in un unico mutevole paesaggio: dall’influenza dei sogni sull’arte alla mistica del disegno, dai misteriosi frammenti autobiografici alle anticipatrici analisi sull’arte dei folli. È certo che Kubin sia stato un cantore del declino della vecchia civiltà europea, così come un contemporaneo di Freud ed evocatore di paure e desideri rimossi, ma queste definizioni rendono giustizia solo in parte a un artista che si voleva senza tempo e, per questo, rimane oggi assolutamente moderno.
