I contributi raccolti in questo volume indagano, da differenti prospettive di ricerca, le trasformazioni dello scenario politico-giuridico globale, con l’intento comune di mettere alla prova la persistenza delle istituzioni e dei poteri sedimentati nella tradizione moderna. Negli attuali processi di governance, le categorie e i concetti centrali in quella tradizione, se reggono sul piano dell’enunciazione e della citazione, vengono però ripensati e rielaborati dentro nuove logiche che ne rifiutano l’originario carattere unitario, ricompositivo e universalistico. Sfuma il nucleo normativo e ordinamentale entro il quale sovranità, cittadinanza, diritti e soggetti venivano pensati come universali giuridico-politici, per emergere e definirsi in modo contingente e immanente nelle pratiche effettive di concrete relazioni di potere. La disaggregazione e disarticolazione delle forme e degli spazi restituisce tutta la complessità e duttilità dei concetti che pur sopravvivono ai contesti stessi che li avevano generati: residui del passato vengono riletti e riutilizzati in forme profondamente diverse. Antonio Tucci è professore associato di Sociologia del diritto e Filosofia politica presso il Dipartimento di Scienze giuridiche dell’Università di Salerno. Reminiscent of More's Utopia and Swift's Gulliver's Travels, Denis Veiras's History of the Sevarambians is one of the great utopian novels of the seventeenth century. Set in Australia, this rollicking adventure story comes complete with a shipwreck, romantic tales, religious fraud, magical talismans, and supernatural animals. The current volume contains two versions of Veiras's story: the original English and the 1738 English translation of the expanded French version. Veiras's work was well known in its own time and has been translated into a number of languages, including German, French, Russian, and Japanese, while the English version has been largely forgotten. The book has been read to teach a variety of political doctrines, and also has been cited as an early development in the history of ideas about religious toleration. It reveals a great deal about early modern English, Dutch, and French attitudes toward other cultures. One of the first utopian writings to qualify as a novel, it can be interpreted as a metaphor for human life, in all its complexity and ambiguity.

Antonio Gramsci lived the Great War as a “historic break,” a profound experience that left an indelible mark on the development of his political thought. Translated into English for the first time, Alternative Modernities reconstructs and analyses this critical period of Gramsci’s intellectual formation through a systematic analysis of his writings from 1915 to 1935. For Gramsci, Soviet Communism, “Americanism,” and the “new” Fascist State were the principle responses to the crisis of the old world order. He portrayed them as the three protagonists of twentieth-century modernity, alternatives destined to tragically clash in the worldwide struggle for hegemony. Among the arguments in his Prison Notebooks, Gramsci casts doubt on the political strategy of Soviet Communism and the theoretical underpinnings of “official Marxism.” Instead, he suggests a radical revision of Marxism by breathing life into a new interpretation whose fundamental concepts are: politics as the struggle for hegemony, the “passive revolution” as a historical paradigm of modernity, and the philosophy of praxis as the welding between visions of the worlds, historical analyses, and political strategies. Gramsci’s intuitions culminate in a new theory of the political subject, supported by a reflection upon the 20th century that still speaks to us today, pointing the way toward a new narrative of world history.
