«A che cosa somiglia il sogno?». Fin dall’antica domanda di Aristotele, possiamo inquadrare il paesaggio onirico solo per analogie, paragoni, metafore. Oppure, come ci suggerisce James Hillman in questo percorso sconcertante e provocatorio, possiamo accedervi lasciandoci alle spalle ogni tentativo di razionalizzarlo e di tradurlo nel linguaggio diurno, come era avvenuto, seppure con metodi opposti, nel caso di Freud e di Jung. La soluzione, per Hillman, consiste invece nel tornare alla mitologia come a una vera e propria «psicologia dell’antichità» e a una lettura del sogno come dimensione del «mondo infero», in quanto invisibilmente intrecciato a quello superno. Per accompagnarci in questa discesa notturna nell’«altro mondo», Hillman fa ricorso al vasto patrimonio delle tradizioni arcaiche, da quella egizia (che mostra il mondo sotterraneo come un reame in cui i morti camminano a testa in giù) a quella romana, a quella indiana. In quei riti e in quei miti, ben più che nella prassi psicologica moderna – che è sempre in qualche misura malata di riduzionismo –, si incontrano le immagini e i gesti che possono più aiutarci, ancora oggi, nella silenziosa «lotta sulla soglia» che è il nostro rapporto con la realtà onirica.

These translations of the major poems of Giacomo Leopardi (1798--1837) render into modern English verse the work of a writer who is widely regarded as the greatest lyric poet in the Italian literary tradition. In spite of this reputation, and in spite of a number of nineteenth-and twentieth-century translations, Leopardi's poems have never "come over" into English in such a way as to guarantee their author a recognition comparable to that of other great European Romantic poets. By catching something of Leopardi's cadences and tonality in a version that still reads as idiomatic modern English (with an occasional Irish or American accent), Leopardi: Selected Poems should win for the Italian poet the wider appreciative audience he deserves.
