Giosuè Carducci, (born July 27, 1835, Val di Castello, near Lucca, Tuscany [now Italy]—died Feb. 16, 1907, Bologna, Italy), Italian poet, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1906, and one of the most influential literary figures of his age. The son of a republican country doctor, Carducci spent his childhood in the wild Maremma region of southern Tuscany. He studied at the University of Pisa and in 1860 became professor of Italian literature at Bologna, where he lectured for more than 40 years. He was made a senator for life in 1890 and was revered by the Italians as a national poet.

Istituto per la Storia del Risorgimento italiano - Biblioteca scientifica Serie II: Fonti - Vol. XCVII La corona dei dodici sonetti di Ça ira dà voce poetica alle riflessioni di Carducci sul "momento più epico della storia moderna", come egli stesso definì il Settembre 1792 in una nota posta in calce alla prima edizione del poemetto nel maggio 1883. Sullo sfondo dell'opera, il cui titolo riprende le parole del canto che risuonò nelle strade di Parigi, era anche il contrasto di interpretazioni sull'eredità della Rivoluzione francese, che la fase critica dei rapporti italo-francesi aveva riacceso fra moderati e democratici. Superate le asprezze della giovanile esperienza giambica, ma ancora animato da una forte passione civile, Carducci restituisce il senso degli episodi rivoluzionari "senza mistura di elementi personali", adottando una forma metrica del tutto insolita per un tema storico e rielaborando alcuni spunti delle narrazioni di Carlyle, Blanc e Michelet. Nei "settembrini", che inevitabilmente rinfocolarono le polemiche (l'autore replicò nei mesi successivi con una lunga e battagliera prosa apologetica), è riaffermato il valore non soltanto delle idee del 1789, ma anche dei successivi esiti, drammatici e violenti, della Rivoluzione, fino alla luminosa giornata di Valmy (20 settembre 1792), quando anche Goethe, presente all'epica battaglia, volle cogliere, nella vittoria dell'esercito francese, l'inizio di una nuova era per l'umanità. A un profilo storico-biografico di Carducci, orientato alla definizione dei suoi giudizi intorno alla Francia rivoluzionaria, si uniscono la ricostruzione della genesi di Ça ira e i commenti ai singoli sonetti, mentre un'ampia appendice offre l'edizione critica del poemetto, qui per la prima volta presentato sulla base di una organica classificazione delle testimonianze manoscritte e a stampa. Con premessa di William Spaggiari Stefania Baragetti è dottoranda in Italianistica presso l'Università degli Studi di Parma e svolge attività di collaborazione presso il Dipartimento di Filologia Moderna dell'Università degli Studi di Milano. Ha in corso ricerche sull'Accademia dell'Arcadia.
