La violence des Etats centraméricains défraye souvent la chronique : conducteurs de bus tués, femmes assassinées, guerres de gangs - les fameuses maras - sur fond de narcotrafic. Au Guatemala, cette violence relève du quotidien. Ce pays d'Amérique centrale détient l'un des taux d'homicide les plus élevés au monde. Plus qu'ailleurs, le militantisme syndical se confronte à des pratiques diffuses de discriminations antisyndicales et à des formes violentes de répression. Très peu de secteurs économiques échappent à ces contraintes. Certains secteurs sont même réputés pour leur lutte farouche contre toute forme d'action collective au travail. C'est notamment le cas des usines d'assemblage d'habits - appelées maquilas - qui fabriquent depuis maintenant plus d'une trentaine d'années pour les grandes multinationales du prêt-à-porter. Pourtant, une poignée de syndicats est parvenue à émerger au cours des dix dernières années. Ce livre retrace la trajectoire de ces mobilisations syndicales depuis les réseaux d'activisme transnational jusqu'aux luttes locales des ouvriers ; mobilisations contraintes de toute part, entre la violence et l'insécurité sociales, les stratégies antisyndicales et l'impunité ordinaire qui continue d'entourer l'exercice quotidien du droit du travail au Guatemala. Car, depuis les marques sans usines du Nord jusqu'aux maquilas du Sud, une chaîne de déresponsabilisation tend à rendre invisible l'horreur au travail.
