At the outbreak of the First World War, an entire generation of young men charged into battle for what they believed was a glorious cause. Over the next four years, that cause claimed the lives of some 13 million soldiers--more than twice the number killed in all the major wars from 1790 to 1914. But despite this devastating toll, the memory of the war was not, predominantly, of the grim reality of its trench warfare and battlefield carnage. What was most remembered by the war's participants was its sacredness and the martyrdom of those who had died for the greater glory of the fatherland. War, and the sanctification of it, is the subject of this pioneering work by well-known European historian George L. Mosse. Fallen Soldiers offers a profound analysis of what he calls the Myth of the War Experience--a vision of war that masks its horror, consecrates its memory, and ultimately justifies its purpose. Beginning with the Napoleonic wars, Mosse traces the origins of this myth and its symbols, and examines the role of war volunteers in creating and perpetuating it. But it was not until World War I, when Europeans confronted mass death on an unprecedented scale, that the myth gained its widest currency. Indeed, as Mosse makes clear, the need to find a higher meaning in the war became a national obsession. Focusing on Germany, with examples from England, France, and Italy, Mosse demonstrates how these nations--through memorials, monuments, and military cemeteries honoring the dead as martyrs--glorified the war and fostered a popular acceptance of it. He shows how the war was further promoted through a process of trivialization in which war toys and souvenirs, as well as postcards like those picturing the Easter Bunny on the Western Front, softened the war's image in the public mind. There the glorified notion of war played into the militant politics of the Nazi party, fueling the belligerent nationalism that led to World War II. But that cataclysm would ultimately shatter the myth, and in exploring the postwar years, Mosse reveals the extent to which the view of death in war, and war in general, was finally changed. The massacre of Algerian demonstrators by the Paris police on the night of 17 October 1961 is one of the most contested events in contemporary French history. This book provides a multi-layered investigation of the repression through a critical examination of newly opened archives, oral sources, the press and contemporary political movements and debates. The roots of violence are traced back to counter-insurgency techniques developed by the French military in North Africa and introduced into Paris to crush the independence movement among Algerian migrant workers. The study shows how and why this event was rapidly expunged from public visibility in France, but was kept alive by immigrant and militant minorities, to resurface in a dramatic form after the 1980s. Through this case-study the authors explore both the dynamics of state terror as well as the complex memorial processes by which these events continue to inform and shape post-colonial society.

A considérer le nombre d’étudiants « indigènes » qui sont passés par le système de l’enseignement secondaire et supérieur colonial, le taux d’analphabétisme relevé pour les années 1960 (85 % de la population algérienne), ou même la part des élèves scolarisés dans le primaire sur celle des enfants en âge d’être scolarisés (moins de 10 % en 54), le bilan scolaire colonial apparaît dérisoire, contrairement à ce que peuvent affirmer les thuriféraires de la colonisation positive. L’histoire de la politique scolaire coloniale n’a ainsi jamais été ce lent mouvement de civilisation des populations locales. Elle apparaît plutôt comme un processus profondément contradictoire dont les déterminants sont à rechercher aussi bien chez les émetteurs que chez les récepteurs de cette politique. Reprenant une analyse historique de l’imposition du système scolaire français à l’Algérie et restituant des mémoires et des expériences d’acteurs, le présent ouvrage va au fond de ces contradictions, dont les instituteurs et enseignants ont en été les figures emblématiques. La République a bien été en effet coloniale et beaucoup d’enseignants en ont été les instruments, à leur insu ou conscients. D’autres, plus nombreux, se sont confrontés au nom des principes fondateurs de la République, aux dénis de droits, à l’injustice et aux atteintes à la dignité humaine. Leur action en Algérie coloniale n’a de pendant que la discrétion de leur retrait ces dernières années face aux bruits et fureurs soulevés ici et là par un revivalisme des mémoires coloniales. Adossées à une analyse historique, les mémoires et les expériences de ces enseignants illustrent leurs engagements, aussi bien dans la situation coloniale, où ils ont voulu pour certains être des passerelles entre les communautés clivées, que dans l’Algérie indépendante où nombre d’entre eux ont participé à la socialisation de la jeunesse algérienne et soutenu la construction du jeune État-nation algérien.
