28 dicembre 1908, un terremoto di immani proporzioni colpisce Reggio Calabria, Messina e i paesi del circondario. È la più grave catastrofe che il neonato Stato italiano si trovi ad affrontare e il suo impatto sulla pubblica opinione è straordinario quanto inatteso. «Non furono soltanto le brutali dimensioni della calamità a colpire gli italiani, ma anche il fatto che essa portò alla luce alcune delle inquietudini più profonde della società. Il luogo del disastro subì un sovraccarico semiotico: sotto lo sguardo inorridito di un pubblico nazionale ogni scena diventò un simbolo, ogni aneddoto l’involucro di una verità più ampia. Si innescò un movimento di compassione e solidarietà patriottiche di proporzioni mai viste in un paese dove la debolezza del sentimento di identità nazionale è un luogo comune. Gli italiani, come si diceva e si dice ancora spesso, non si sentivano molto italiani: la loro identità era basata sulla località geografica di appartenenza, sulla famiglia, sulla politica o sulla religione, più che sulla nazione. Eppure volontari da tutto il paese si misero in viaggio per dare una mano. Quotidiani e riviste parlarono del disastro fino alla saturazione. Comitati civici spuntarono come funghi per raccogliere fondi. A Roma si tennero i ‘plebisciti del dolore’: i cittadini deponevano le donazioni in ‘urne elettorali’ avvolte nel tricolore, che rievocavano i plebisciti che avevano ratificato l’unità. Sarà stato anche un fenomeno eccezionale ma a mio parere qualsiasi analisi del ruolo del patriottismo nella storia d’Italia che non sia in grado di darne conto va necessariamente rivista o scartata.»
