“Sta forse giungendo a compimento il senso espresso dalla nostra cultura che, come dice il nome, è ‘occidentale’, cioè ‘serale’, avviata a un ‘tramonto’, a una ‘fine’. L’evento occidentale è sempre stato presso la sua fine, ma solo ora comincia a prenderne coscienza. Ma che cosa finisce, oggi che l’Occidente è sulla via di occidentalizzare il mondo e, quindi, di annullare la propria specificità che l’ha reso finora riconoscibile? Finisce la fiducia che l’Occidente aveva riposto nel progressivo dominio da parte dell’uomo sugli enti di natura, oggi divenuti, al pari dell’uomo, materiali della tecnica. Ma la tecnica non ha alcun fine da raggiungere né alcuno scopo da realizzare, non apre scenari di salvezza, non redime, non svela la verità, la tecnica ‘funziona’ secondo quelle procedure che, pur nel loro rigore e nella loro efficacia, si rivelano incapaci di promuovere un orizzonte di senso. E sulle ceneri della categoria del ‘senso’, che dell’Occidente è sempre stata l’idea guida, si affacciano le figure del nichilismo, le quali, nel proiettare le loro ombre sulla ‘terra della sera’, indicano, a ben guardare, la direzione del tramonto. Un tramonto già iscritto nell’alba di quel giorno in cui l’Occidente ha preso a interpretare se stesso come cultura del dominio dell’uomo sulle cose.”.

C’è un filo sottile che lega “Weimar” a Hiroshima. È il filo conduttore della ricerca scientifica quello che faustianamente può produrre bene o male a seconda dell’uso che noi facciamo dei risultati delle scoperte scientifiche. È quello che da “Weimar” va fino alla bomba atomica su Hiroshima. La Repubblica di Weimar nata dal disastro della “grande guerra” noi la ricordiamo con le lenti appannate del tempo, come i lontani “roaring twenties”. Momento di grandi artisti, pensatori, esperimenti sociali e grandi scienziati, compreso Einstein. Ma anche di turbolenze politiche, movimenti sindacali e grandi masse di disoccupati. È il tempo per Osvald Spengler, Thomas Mann e altri scrittori di riflettere sulla decadenza dell’“Occidente” che andrà incontro ai fascismi neri e rossi e a una guerra catastrofica peggiore della prima guerra mondiale. Finiti i valori etici, politici e sociali che l’“Occidente” aveva sparso per il mondo? Sembra quasi un paradosso vedere un paese di grande cultura come era la Germania agli inizi del ’900 scivolare lentamente verso uno dei peggiori regimi: il nazismo. Viene allora da chiedersi se la cultura possa essere un antidoto al male. La risposta è no. Durante gli anni ruggenti di “Weimar” non c’è solo Marlene Dietrich ne L’angelo azzurro, ma ci sono, ai seminari di Gottinga, in Germania, nel ’26 e ’27, fra gli altri fisici, Fermi e Oppenheimer che ritroviamo, alla fine degli anni ’30, in America, e che saranno i realizzatori della bomba atomica.

The notion of 'the human' is in need of urgent redefinition. At a time of radical bio-technological developments, and in light of the political and environmental imperatives of our age, the term 'posthuman' provides an alternative. The philosophical landscape which has developed as a response to the crisis of the human, includes several movements, such as: Posthumanism, Transhumanism, Antihumanism and Object Oriented Ontology. This book explains the similarities and differences between these currents and offers a detailed examination of a number of topics that fall under the “posthuman” umbrella, including the anthropocene, artificial intelligence and the deconstruction of the human. Francesca Ferrando affords particular focus to Philosophical Posthumanism, defined as a philosophy of mediation which addresses the meaning of humanity not in separation, but in relation to technology and ecology. The posthuman shift thus emerges in the global call for social change, responsible science and multispecies coexistence.
