Si tratterebbe, se le ipotesi fossero confermate, della più preziosa reliquia della cristianità, per secoli conservata nella Basilica di San Pietro: enigmatici episodi, scomuniche papali, intrighi e colpi di scena costellano la storia di questa finissima tela. Dopo aver rischiato di essere distrutto dagli iconoclasti, il Volto giunse a Roma e qui rimase, fra alterne vicende, fino al Sacco del 1527, in seguito al quale scomparve per poi finire, un secolo dopo, sull'altare maggiore del santuario abruzzese. Basandosi su una accurata documentazione, Saverio Gaeta ricostruisce in questo libro un'avventura vera che fa impallidire le piu complesse trame romanzesche. E illustra i risultati di studi storici, iconografici e tissutali i quali — dimostrando che il telo non e dipinto da mano umana, non presenta tracce di pigmenti ed e perfettamente sovrapponibile al volto dell'uomo della Sindone — conducono verso la soluzione definitiva di un affascinante mistero plurisecolare.
