Letteralmente il titolo si traduce in "Tomorrowland", ma storicamente è stato tradotto come "Il viaggio in Oriente". Questa edizione contiene anche un epilogo del traduttore, un glossario filosofico dei concetti utilizzati da Hesse e una cronologia della sua vita e delle sue opere. Hesse ha vinto il Premio Nobel per la Letteratura nel 1947. Ha ricevuto anche il Premio Goethe di Francoforte nel 1946 e il Premio per la Pace dei Librai Tedeschi nel 1955. Hesse stesso disse che lo scopo della storia era "la solitudine dell'essere umano spirituale nel nostro tempo e la necessità di classificare la sua vita personale e le sue azioni in un insieme sovrapersonale, un'idea e una comunità, un desiderio di servizio, una ricerca di comunità, la liberazione dallo sterile, solitario virtuosismo dell'artista". "Il viaggio in Oriente" è un racconto di Hermann Hesse, pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1932, che descrive un viaggio in un Oriente spirituale. Hermann Hesse iniziò a lavorare a "Il viaggio in Oriente" nell'estate del 1930, poco prima di trasferirsi a Montagnola da Casa Camuzzi a una casa appena costruita per lui da Hans Conrad Bodmer e poco prima del matrimonio con la sua terza moglie, Ninon Dolbin. La sua vecchia malattia agli occhi era peggiorata e Hesse era sull'orlo della cecità. Dopo dolorosi interventi chirurgici, dovette rimanere in una stanza buia per settimane. Dedicò l'opera, completata nell'aprile del 1931, al suo mecenate Bodmer e a sua moglie Elsy. Nello stesso anno fu prestampata sulla rivista "Corona", diretta dal figlio di Bodmer, e la prima edizione fu pubblicata da S. Fischer Verlag nel 1932. Alfred Kubin ha disegnato la copertina, la giacca di polvere e la vignetta sul frontespizio. Il Viaggio in Oriente" abbandona lo stile sublime caratteristico de "Il gioco delle perle di vetro" o di "Siddharta" ed è scritto in un linguaggio fresco, poeticamente incantevole e talvolta quasi ingenuo. È un poema fiabesco che si rivolge direttamente al lettore. La narrazione è ricca di simboli, metafore e parabole, spesso incomprensibili per il lettore senza una conoscenza dettagliata del contesto biografico e storico contemporaneo. Lo stesso Hesse scrisse in una lettera ad Alice Leuthold: "Il simbolismo in sé non deve necessariamente diventare 'chiaro' per il lettore; egli non deve capire nel senso di 'spiegare', ma piuttosto deve assorbire le immagini e il loro significato, ciò che contengono come parabola della vita, e inghiottirlo di lato; l'effetto poi si instaura inconsciamente".
