Il racconto si svolge in un periodo di cinquantuno giorni della guerra dei Greci contro Troia (Ilio, da cui il titolo dell'opera). Inizia con l'ira di Achille, l'invincibile eroe dell'esercito greco, contro il capo della spedizione Agamennone, colpevole di avergli sottratto la schiava Briseide, sino al rinsavimento di Achille furioso davanti al padre di Ettore, l'eroe dell'esercito troiano sconfitto dall'astuzia di Odisseo (Ulisse). Marco Bonfiglio ha inteso coniugare questa famosissima opera con un linguaggio attuale. L'Iliade si trasforma così, da epica, in avvincente narrativa. In romanzo sì di guerra ma anche di varia umanità.

Enea fugge con il padre Anchise e il figlioletto Ascanio alla ricerca di una nuova patria su consiglio divino. Da lui un giorno sarebbe nata la stirpe che avrebbe dato vita alla grandezza di Roma, ecco perché il suo peregrinare (che ricorda moltissimo quello di Ulisse) lo porterà infine a sbarcare nelle rive del Lazio.
