Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator; Or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Vol. 1: Expository, Scientific, Georgraphical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible The Books of Kings and the Books of Chronicles. - The Jewish literature contained two historical books which virtually covered the same period. The two Books of Kings, and the two Books of Chronicles are in many respects alike, bat the differences are more evident than the resemblances. Ah historical works that cover extensive periods ofttimes must, of necessity, be compilations. The writer of any national history may more precisely be designated an editor, or a computer, than an author, because he does not create any new material, but puts into shape and order material that already exists, for which he may indeed elaborately and perseveringly search, but which is in no sense his own.e The ruling purpose and prevailing bias of a writer are shown by what he selects from the facts at his command, and by the particular setting which he gives to the facts, and his annotations upon them. The compilers of the Books of Kings and Books of chronicles were certainly not the same person. Their points of view and historical purpose were distinctly different. But they had the same literary materials at their command, and we can reasonably infer what those materials are likely to have been. Every civilised and organised nation is careful to preserve authentic and official historical records, and we may be sure that the Jewish national records were anxiously preserved when the people were carried into captivity. These would be available for the later historian. It also appears that the keeping of genealogical tables and family and official lists was the business of that priestly class, which included the scribes. They were exceedingly jealous of the safety and correctness of their tables. It was their special duty, because certain religious privileges and offices were reserved for those whose pedigree could be traced. And in every nation, in every age, men have been raised up who were endowed with the literary historical genius; and such men will, in various forms, make their records of the events of their time. But all such independent and unofficial work is sure to be written with a personal political or religious bias, of which the later reader, or the later compiler, has to take due account. The later editor of any extensive and varied series of earlier records, covering long periods, has a very anxious and difficult work. And it is all the more difficult if he himself has a strong personal bias, from which he can never get himself wholly free. And this appears to have been the case with the compiler of the Books of Chronicles. He evidently had an ethical, we might have said, a sectional purpose, which guided and determined his selections and settings. Historical Material At The Command Of The Compiler. Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Vol. 6: Expository, Scientific, Geographical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible; Joshua, Judges, Ruth Tee object or m Boom - The object of the book is to magnify the inviolable covenant faithfulness of Jehovah in the fulfilment of His promises (xxi. 43 by the historical information as to the conquest by the covenant people of the land of Canaan promised to their fathers, and their inheritance of it (i. 2 through the Almighty assistance of Jehovah, under the guidance of Joshua, Moses' minister, who had been called to effect the accomplishment of the Divine promise, according to an appointment recorded in the law itself (deut. Xxxi. Prof. C'. F. Keil.) The Book of Joshua is one of the most important writings in t 9 Old Covenant, and should never be separated from the Pentateuch, of which it is at once both the continuation and completion. Between this book and the five books of Moses there is the same analogy as between the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. The four Gospels give an account of the transactions of Jesus Christ, the Christian legislature, just as the first five books of the Bible give, for the most part, of the doings of Moses, the Jewish legislator; and the Acts of the Apostles, as a book, bears the same relation to these Gospels as the Book of Joshua to the Pentateuch. Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Expository, Scientific, Georgraphical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible, Vol. 1: The Minor Prophets; Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, and Micah God has many ways by which He prepares His servants for the doing 'of His work - many schools to which He sends them. But there is no teacher whom He uses more frequently than the stern teacher whose name is Sorrow. He makes His children acquainted with bitter trial and privation and 1088; He brings them into the wilderness, as Hosea says, in order that among the barren rocks and sands He may speak to their hearts; He imparts to them their wisdom and their strength through the discipline of sacrifice and pain. Moses is sent to the deserts of Midian, that he may be accustonied there to the endurance of difiiculty and Opposition, and that in these lonely solitudes, where he is shut out from intercourse with his fellow-men, he may learn to hold close fellowship with his Divine Master and King. Paul writes his loftiest and profoundest letters from the prison-house of Nero, where for the hope of Israel he is bound with a chain. It was in the school-house of sorrow that God fashioned the prophet Hosea into fitness for his life-task. Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, Vol. 2: Or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Expository, Scientific, Geographical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible; Isaiah Ver. 2. Yet He also is wise - God works in history: - You have been clever and successful, but have you for otten that God also is wise, that He too has His policy, and acts reasons ly and consistently 1 You think you have been making history; but God also works in history, and surely, to put it on the lowest ground, with as much cleverness and persistence as you do. (prof. G. A. Smith, D.D.) Forgetfulness of God - The forgetfulness, against which Isaiah directs this shaft of satire, is the besetting sin of very religious people, of very successful people, and of very clever people. (ibid.) The religion that ignores God - It is the temptation of an ordinary Christian, church going people, like ourselves, with a religion so full of marvellous mercies, and so b essed with regular Opportunities of worship, to think Of God only in con nection with these, and practically to ignore that along the far greater stretches of life He has any interest or purpose regarding us. (ibid.) Man no match for God -after Moscow, Napoleon is reported to have exclaimed, The Almighty is too strong for me. (ibid.) Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations Expository, Scientific, Georgraphical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible: Romans, Vol; I IV. Concnunme sameness. Coleridge pronounced the Epistle to be the foundest book in existence. Chrysostom had it read to him twice a week. Uther says in his preface: This Epistle is the chief work of the New Testament, the purest gospel. It deserves not only to be known word for word by every Christian, but to be the subject of his meditation day by day, the daily bread of his soul. The more time one spends upon it, the more precious it becomes and the better it appears. Melanchthon, in order to make it thoroughly his own, copied rt twice with his own hand. It is the book he most frequently expounded in his lectures. The Reformation was undoubtedly the work of Romans as well as Galatians; and the probability is that every great spiritual revival in the Church will be connected as cause and effect with a deeper understanding of this book. This observation unquestionably applies to the various religious awakenings which have successively marked the course of our century. In studying the Epistle we feel ourselves at every word face to face with the unfathomable. Our experience is somewhat analogous to what we feel when contemplating the great master ieces of medieval architecture, such, e.g., as the cathedral of Milan. We do not which to admire most, the majesty of the whole or the finish of the details. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, Vol. 2: Or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations; Expository, Scientific, Georgraphical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible; Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai Zechariah, and Malac There are two sides to the character of God - two sides which yet are perfectly consistent and harmonious. At times He shows Himself most gentle and compassionate, ready to pardon wrong-doing, willing to admit the wrong-doer to His own fellowship and favour. At other times He is stern in Hid justice, inflicting punishment upon evil, visiting the crimes of men with the tribulation and anguish which are their due. There is no contradiction, as I have said, between these perfections of God. He is stable, consistent, immutable, although now He speaks in the thunder and the mighty rushing wind, and now in the still, small voice. For, first of all, He cannot but act differently toward different classes of men - different moods and conditions of soul. To the penitent heart that weeps bitterly over its sin, to the faithful servant who keeps well his Master's trust, He must of necessity reveal His mercy and love; it is not in His nature to shut such as these out from His favour. But to souls that are proud and wilful and wedded to their iniquity, what can God be but just and severe and terrible, a consuming fire, a hammer to break the flinty rock in pieces? He would forfeit His uprightness were He to deal leniently with these. And then, also, so far from mercy and judgment being irreconcilable the one with the other, there are seasons when the infliction of judgment is indeed the truest mercy. His own children will breathe more freely once their oppressor and antagonist is away; weak and yielding souls will be prevented from surrendering themselves to His will; and the world will be lifted up to a higher level. Very frequently mercy and justice are in reality synonymous terms. Such thoughts as these are awakened within us when we open this Book of Nahum. It is not a book which deals either with Israel or with Judah. It has no direct reference to the chosen people. It is concerned from first to last with the fate of Nineveh, the proud capital of Assyria. Jonah, the son of Amittai, had been sent thither by God about two hundred years before Nahum's time. And the Assyrian monarch and people of Jonah's day had opened their hearts to hear God's Word and to acknowledge His presence and authority. Seeing their sorrow and rejoicing at its manifestation, He had passed from the fierceness of His anger. But their penitence was of short duration. Soon they had grown haughty and sin-loving and cruel again. And God could bear with their tyranny and evil no longer. He bade His servant Nahum prophesy their speedy destruction. Jonah had been His messenger of grace to Assyria; Nahum is His messenger of judgment. I. It is exceedingly little that we know of the personae history of this prophet. To most of us he is simply a voice crying in the desert; we remember him by his words alone. But I think it is possible for us to fashion for ourselves some authentic picture of the man and his surroundings. There has long been debate as to the locality of his birth. "Nahum the Elkoshite," he is described in the opening of the book; but it is hard to decide what meaning should be attached to the epithet. The Christian father Jerome speaks of a village called Elkesai which lay in Galilee, and tells us that a few relics of it were pointed out to him by a dweller in the district. Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator; Or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations: Expository, Scientific, Georgraphical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible Tm: Canomorrr or me Boom - The collection of sacred writings which was held in reverence by the Jews of Palestine in the days of our Lord and His apostles, consisted of twenty-two books, and these included the Book of Ecclesiastes. The first preachers of Christianity appear to have been in complete agreement with their unconverted brethren as to the authority of their sacred books; and in point of fact, all the books of the Jewish canon have always enjoyed unquestioned authority in the Christian Church. It is no disparagement to the authority of the Book of Ecclesiastes that no direct quotation from it is to be found in the New Testament. A few coincidences of thought or expression have been pointed out (0. G. Eccles. Xi. 5 with John iii. 8; Eccles. Ix. 10 with John ix. But none of them is decisive enough to warrant our asserting with any confidence that the Old Testament passage was present to the mind of the New Testament writer. 'but there is no reason to imagine that any of the apostles would have hesitated to appeal to the authority of any book of the Jewish canon, if his subject had required such a reference. In the Jewish schools there was controversy, about the end of the first century of our era, whether the Book of Ecclesiastes was one of those which defile the hands that is to say, whether it was affected by certain ceremonial ordinances, devised in order to guard the sacred books from irreverent usage. We need not inquire what exact amount of authority might be conceded to the book by those who then placed it on a lower level than the rest; for the view which ultimately prevailed recognized it as entitled to all the prerogatives of canonical Scripture.
