Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Vol. 6: Expository, Scientific, Geographical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible; Joshua, Judges, Ruth Tee object or m Boom - The object of the book is to magnify the inviolable covenant faithfulness of Jehovah in the fulfilment of His promises (xxi. 43 by the historical information as to the conquest by the covenant people of the land of Canaan promised to their fathers, and their inheritance of it (i. 2 through the Almighty assistance of Jehovah, under the guidance of Joshua, Moses' minister, who had been called to effect the accomplishment of the Divine promise, according to an appointment recorded in the law itself (deut. Xxxi. Prof. C'. F. Keil.) The Book of Joshua is one of the most important writings in t 9 Old Covenant, and should never be separated from the Pentateuch, of which it is at once both the continuation and completion. Between this book and the five books of Moses there is the same analogy as between the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. The four Gospels give an account of the transactions of Jesus Christ, the Christian legislature, just as the first five books of the Bible give, for the most part, of the doings of Moses, the Jewish legislator; and the Acts of the Apostles, as a book, bears the same relation to these Gospels as the Book of Joshua to the Pentateuch. Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Vol. 1: Expository, Scientific, Georgraphical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible; Hebrews Objection to this theory that the Church of Alexandria retained no tradition that this E pistle was written by their brilliant fellow-countryman. But although Apollos was an Alexandrian by birth and training, it does not follow that he had lived in his native city, and as he had left the ci before he became a Christian, he might have been a stranger to the Alexan an Christians. We do not hear a word about the Epistle in that Church until a century after it was written. At any rate, this difficulty is not so great as that which arises from the supposition that the Epistle was the work of St. Paul, and yet was not recog nised as such for some centuries by the Western Church, and only partially and hesitatingly by the Eastern. For there would be every temptation to attri bute the work to the apostle, and none to associate it with the name of Apollos, which, except in one or two Churches, seems to have been but little known. It is not a decisive objection to the Apollonian authorship that no one is known to have suggested it before Luther. In the early centuries the Epistle was only assigned to this or that author by a process of tentative guesswork. Those who saw that St. Paul could not have been the actual author often adapted one of the arbitrary hypotheses, that it is a translation, or that the sentiments and the language were supplied by different persons. The self-suppression of Apollos resulted in the comparative obscurity of his work, and the Fathers, having nothing but conjecture to deal with, fixed upon names every one of which was more generally familiar than that of the eloquent Alexandrian. And it it be strange that the name of Apollos should not have been preserved by the Church to which the letter was despatched, we may account for this by the absence of superscription, and by the fact that it was only addressed to the Jewish section of that Church. This much may be said with certainty, that if it were not written by Apollos, at any rate the evidence which points to him as its author is more various and more conclusive than that which can be adduced to support the claims of any one else. (archdeacon Farrar.) May we not say that this Epistle resembles, in these respects, the great Melchisedec of sacred story, of whom its central portion treats? Like him, it marches forth in lonely, royal, and sacerdotal dignity, and like him is without genealogy. We know not whence it cometh nor whither it goeth. (f. Delitzsch, D.D.) Whoever is the author of this Epistle, its value and authority remain the same. We may compare it, says Thiersch, to a painting of perfect beauty, which had been regarded as a work of Raphael. If it should be proved that it was not painted by flagged, Ii: have thereby not lost a classical piece of art, but gained another master 0 t ta. Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations Expository, Scientific, Georgraphical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible: Romans, Vol; I IV. Concncnma summons. Coleridge pronounced the Epistle to be the foundest book in existence. Chrysostom had it read to him twice a week. Uther says in his preface: This Epistle is the chief work of the New Testament, the purest gospel. It deserves not only to be known word for word by every Christian, but to be the subject of his meditation day by day, the daily bread of his soul. The more time one spends upon it, the more precious it becomes and the better it appears. Melanchthon, in order to make it thoroughly his own, copied It twice with his own hand. It is the book he most frequently expounded in his lectures. The Reformation was undoubtedly the work of Romans as well as Galatians; and the probability is that every great spiritual revival in the Church will be connected as cause and effect with a deeper understanding of this book. This observation unquestionably applies to the various religious awakenings which have successively marked the course of our century. In studying the Epistle we feel ourselves at every word face to face with the unfathomable. Our experience is somewhat analogous to what we feel when contemplating the great master races of medimval architecture, such, as the cathedral of Milan. We do not which to admire most, the majesty of the whole or the finish of the details. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Expository, Scientific, Geographical, Historical, and Homiletic: Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible Vers. 1-3. The Revelation of Jesus Christ - The Revelation of Jesus Christ I. The revelation, OR apocalypse. 1. This sacred book is called the Revelation, or Apocalypse, to express its origin. It is the Word of the living God, given by Divine inspiration, and invested with Divine authority. 2. It is called the Apocalypse to express its nature. It gives a blessed manifestation of the character, counsels, and dealings of God. 3. It is called the Apocalypse, to express its object. There is an objective revelation of the character and will of God which is given in His Word; of the great plan of mercy which is given in the gospel; of the great events of Provi dence which are given in sacred prophecy. 4. It is called the Apocalypse, to express its subject. There is a subjective revelation experienced by the saint, consisting in the saving illumination of the Spirit (matt. Xi. 25; Psa. Cxix. 5. It is called the Apocalypse, to express its great design. The word signifies to remove the veil that conceals an object from view. 6. There is, notwithstanding this glorious manifestation, considerable darkness resting on this book. It is denominated The mystery of God. This Obscurity arises from the depth of the counsels of heaven, from the symbolical language in which they are revealed, from the prophetical nature of the sacred book. But amid all the mystery with which it is enveloped, there is a light within the cloud to illuminate and cheer. II. The revelation or jesus christ. 1. It is a revelation from Him as the great Author, and the great Medium, and the great Depositary, and the great Dispenser of Divine revelation, and all its hopes, promises, and blessings. 2. It is arevelation concerning Him as the great subject, the sum and substance of the glorious gospel. 3. It is a revelation through Him, as the medium of Divine communication, as the great Prophet and Teacher of the Church. 4. It is a revelation to Him as the great object, the end, the proprietor of the oracles of heaven. It is His - His own peculiar charge, and His own Divine prerogative. In Him all the lines of Divine truth centre; from Him all the beams of its glory irradiate; to Him all the prophets gave witness. III. The great design or this sacred charge. 1. The nature of this design. It is to show. This partially explains the word revelation, which is to make manifest what was before concealed. It also explains the word signified, which is to show verbally, in plain language; or symbolically, by signs or symbols. 2. The persons to whom this design is made known. They are servants - the servants of God, by a devout and voluntary surrender of themselves. They are not only servants, but they are kings and priests. To these distinguished servants God's holy will is given. The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him; and He will show them His covenant. 3. The objects revealed. 4. The time of fulfil ment Things that must shortly come to pass. (1) This may be viewed person: ally, as referring to ourselves as individuals. The time of our departure is at hand. Lord teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
