Valle Inclán lo explicó en los versos modernistas de La marquesa Rosalinda. A diferencia de Francia, aquí no volaban libremente tras los boscajes, ni furtivos besos del Trianón, ni las ideas de Voltaire y Rousseau: con los ramajes de los boscajes, aquí hacía hogueras la Inquisición. El atraso económico, a pesar del imperio, y la intolerancia, crearon condiciones extremas para que las luces arraigaran en España y no obstante el esfuerzo de reforma del absolutismo ilustrado hizo posible esa tarea casi heroica. De ahí el estallido en breve tiempo, no de un simple reformismo, sino de una conciencia política alternativa que apunta a una Constitución. Antes del nombre, nace el liberalismo. Bajo el "infame Godoy", Jovellanos dixit, el río se transforma en guadiana y si bien los objetivos políticos y económicos se concretan, la corriente, desviada por el valido, lleva a 1808. La trayectoria encontrará en Goya un testigo capaz de expresar mediante imágenes únicas el dramatismo de un progreso de la razón que desemboca en tragedia.
