O alvorecer do século XIX foi, tanto para os portugueses de Portugal quanto para os portugueses do Brasil, um período politicamente conturbado, e pontuado por acontecimentos cujos efeitos estimularam sentimento de perda e de nostalgia na relação entre um passado entendido como lócus da glória e da grandeza e um futuro incerto. Podemos perceber esse fenômeno a partir da análise de obras destinadas a celebrar e enaltecer experiências passadas de indivíduos e coletividades. Destaque deve ser concedido às inúmeras "galerias impressas" que passaram a ser editadas nas sociedades europeias e americanas, em publicações esteticamente cuidadosas, por vezes monumentais, desejosas de fazer circular para além dos espaços palacianos aqueles considerados grandes homens. Intituladas genericamente Galeria de Pessoas Ilustres, nelas, pessoas "ilustres" de Portugal e do Brasil ganharam nova visibilidade e outro espaço de circulação. Compostas por dois meios de expressar e qualificar indivíduos (a biografia e o retrato), na junção entre imagem e letra, feitos heroicos eram registrados – e comemorados – tornando-se visíveis, sensibilizando leitores e espectadores de um tempo presente instável e movediço. Nessas visões do passado, algo a ser aprendido e admirado poderia tanto mover a busca de um futuro mais promissor como moldar valores e percepções edificadores do "ser". Atravessadas pelas disputas pelo passado, na cultura histórica oitocentista, o que lembrar e quem lembrar; o que esquecer e quem esquecer foram questões fundamentais. Em suma, a obra demonstra como as galerias de pessoas ilustres se constituíram em trabalhos que iam ao encontro de uma clara distinção social, transformadas em lugares de memória, identidade e, sobretudo, de novas sensibilidades, em um mundo em transformação.

June E. Hahner’s pioneering work,Emancipating the Female Sex,offers the first comprehensive history of the struggle for women’s rights in Brazil. Based on previously undiscovered primary sources and fifteen years of research, Hahner’s study provides long-overdue recognition of the place of women in Latin American history. Hahner traces the history of Brazilian women’s fight for emancipation from its earliest manifestations in the mid-nineteenth century to the successful conclusion of the suffrage campaign in the 1930s. Drawing on interviews with surviving Brazilian suffragists and contemporary feminists as well as manuscripts and printed documents, Hahner explores the strategies and ideological positions of Brazilian feminists. In focusing on urban upper- and middle-class women, from whose ranks the leadership for change arose, she examines the relationship between feminism and social change in Brazil’s complex and highly stratified society.
