The authors of this volume follow the tracks of the darker side of the Reformation and study the relationship with Judaism based on Lutheran theology and on a sense of "dignity of difference" (Jonathan Sacks).To the present day Luther ́s antisemitic polemics have proved to be a burden to the Lutheran Churches. Gemeinsam ringen Synagoge und Kirche um eine systematische Zuordnung der messianischen Juden, die sich selbst als Teil des Judentums betrachten, aber zugleich signifikante Glaubensinhalte des Christentums integrieren. Besonders im Staat Israel führt ihre Existenz und ihre organisierte Judenmission zu theologischen, aber auch juristischen Kontroversen. Obwohl jüdische Instanzen die Frage, wer Jude sei, in der Vergangenheit durchaus unterschiedlich beantwortet haben, ist die Zuordnung der messianischen Juden heute eine hochkomplexe und problematische Angelegenheit. Die Herangehensweise an das Thema erfolgt durch konkrete Einblicke in Geschichte und Gegenwart ihrer Gemeinden in Jerusalem. Deutlich wird dabei, dass z.B. die Hebräisch sprechenden Katholiken, zu denen auch Jüdinnen und Juden gehören, sich selbst nicht den messianischen Juden zurechnen und zudem die Judenmission ablehnen.

The document Church and Israel is regarded as the first endeavour by European Reformation churches to define a common position on the relationship between Christians and Jews. It offers analyses of the biblical foundations and historical development of the relationship between the Church and Israel, discusses previous attempts to clarify the difficult relationship and finally develops its own definition of this relationship. It concludes with practical recommendations on considering Judaism in theology and the church, and a call to take joint responsibility for the world. The document was adopted in 2001 by the General Assembly of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe and is reprinted without change in this new edition. It is supplemented by a report of the conference held to evaluate its reception 10 years later, in 2011, and by two assessments of the study presented on that occasion by Peter Scherle and Micha Brumlik.

Three different areas of Church History are touched by the essays collected in this tripartite volume. The first part is formed by seven studies in ancient Christianity, examining the origin of the soul, Jerome's view on bishops (and its reception in reformation times), the Jewish-Christian-relationship and finally the Athanasian Creed. In the second part four studies deal with the history and piety of Germans in Russia in the 19th and 20th Century. The third part collects five essays related to the history of Oldenburg: St. Lambert and its church, baroque theology and the centennials of the reformation in 1817 and 1917.

Resurrection in the New Testament is a Festschrift offered to J. Lambrecht on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday. Among the many scholarly interests of Professor Lambrecht the theme of the resurrection seemed best suited to honour his academic achievement. The 27 contributions cover many of the books of the New Testament. The first two articles in this volume discuss influences on the New Testament treatment of resurrection from the Greco-Roman (Dieter Zeller) and Jewish (Daniel J. Harrington) backgrounds.
