Real places and events are constructed and used to symbolize abstract formulations of power and authority in politics, corporate practice, the arts, religion, and community. By analyzing the aesthetics of public space in contexts both mundane and remarkable, the contributors examine the social relationship between public and private activities that impart meaning to groups of people beyond their individual or local circumstances. From a range of perspectives—anthropological, sociological, and socio-cultural—the contributors discuss road-making in Peru, mass housing in Britain, an unsettling traveling exhibition, and an art fair in London; we explore the meaning of walls in Jerusalem, a Zen garden in Japan, and religious themes in Europe and India. Literally and figuratively, these situations influence the ways in which ordinary people interpret their everyday worlds. By deconstructing the taken for- granted definitions of social value (democracy, equality, individualism, fortune), the authors reveal the ideological role of imagery and imagination in a globalized political context.

Architects are creators of places. Spaces are produced by the social practice of the user within places. Thus, the user is brought into the picture as a producer of space whereas architects are classified as producers of place. The book addresses the notion of power relations within undefined spaces of transition through case study documentations and by analyzing individual and common expressions in four social housing projects in greater Copenhagen. Understanding the struggle of power relations can help identify an interest articulated by the user. The articulations are made by means of additions that are placed within the spaces of transition. The conclusion that can be drawn is that power relations should be recognized by architects as a phenomenon of the dominating aspect of architecture. Neglecting to consider this domination in the conception of residential housing projects has a large impact on the user and his/her possibilities for practicing social interactions.

The Moving Image As Public Art written by Annie Dell'Aria and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-08 with Art categories.

This book maps the presence of moving images within the field of public art through encounters with passersby. It argues that far from mere distraction or spectacle, moving images can produce moments of enchantment that can renew, intensify, or challenge our everyday engagement with public space and each other. These artworks also offer frameworks for understanding how moving images operate in public space—how they move viewers and reconfigure the site of the screen. Each chapter explores a mode of address that examines how artists and curators leverage the moving image’s attentional power to engage audiences, create spaces, make place, and challenge assumptions. This book also examines the difficulties and compromises that arise when using urban screens for public art.

The exhibition program at the Aga Khan Museum is designed to offer innovative, cross-cultural perspectives on topical issues, using the lens of Islamic art and Muslim cultures as a starting point for examining matters of universal importance and relevance. As part of this programming mission, the exhibition Image? The Power of the Visual tackles no less a subject than the use of the human figure in art. In approaching this subject from the vantage point of Islamic art, we aim to interconnect with some of the biggest questions pondered by artists--and their societies--across time and space. How do we visualize notions of the Divine? How do we represent power? How do we depict the values we admire? And finally, of greatest concern today, how do we portray identity in all its infinite complexities? At the same time, artists in Muslim cultures under specific circumstances have also resorted to non-figural means such as calligraphy to attempt visual responses to those big questions. By contemplating the choices artists have made in terms of using figural or aniconic imagery in that context, we come to understand more about the universal power of the visual and the specific considerations different societies have applied in deciding for or against images in visualizing concepts of profound meaning to them. We hope that Image? The Power of the Visual will spark curiosity and awareness around the deeper messages encapsulated in the creation of images, particularly in the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to an unprecedented proliferation of images across the digital world and reminded us of the existential power of art in contemplating the big questions surrounding the human condition.

Despite the fact that images constitute the main objects in computer vision and image analysis, there is remarkably little concern about their actual definition. In this book a complete account of image structure is proposed in terms of rigorously defined machine concepts, using basic tools from algebra, analysis, and differential geometry. Machine technicalities such as discretisation and quantisation details are de-emphasised, and robustness with respect to noise is manifest. From the foreword by Jan Koenderink: `It is my hope that the book will find a wide audience, including physicists - who still are largely unaware of the general importance and power of scale space theory, mathematicians - who will find in it a principled and formally tight exposition of a topic awaiting further development, and computer scientists - who will find here a unified and conceptually well founded framework for many apparently unrelated and largely historically motivated methods they already know and love. The book is suited for self-study and graduate courses, the carefully formulated exercises are designed to get to grips with the subject matter and prepare the reader for original research.'

What is Image Retrieval An image retrieval system is a computer system used for browsing, searching and retrieving images from a large database of digital images. Most traditional and common methods of image retrieval utilize some method of adding metadata such as captioning, keywords, title or descriptions to the images so that retrieval can be performed over the annotation words. Manual image annotation is time-consuming, laborious and expensive; to address this, there has been a large amount of research done on automatic image annotation. Additionally, the increase in social web applications and the semantic web have inspired the development of several web-based image annotation tools. How you will benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: Image retrieval Chapter 2: Information retrieval Chapter 3: Content-based image retrieval Chapter 4: Automatic image annotation Chapter 5: Google Images Chapter 6: Image meta-search Chapter 7: Visual search engine Chapter 8: Reverse image search Chapter 9: TinEye Chapter 10: Image collection exploration (II) Answering the public top questions about image retrieval. (III) Real world examples for the usage of image retrieval in many fields. Who this book is for Professionals, undergraduate and graduate students, enthusiasts, hobbyists, and those who want to go beyond basic knowledge or information for any kind of Image Retrieval.

Power and Space sets out the inherently spatial nature of power today and seeks to change the conversation around how power exercises us in the contemporary moment. The essays brought together in this book are a response to the fact that conventional descriptions of power and its ordered geographies no longer chime with our lived experience. Spatiality matters to the workings of power nowadays, and this book sheds light on what it is that we face when power is exercised through more subtle, spatially nuanced arrangements. It is divided into three parts, each representing a different kind of engagement with power’s relationship to space, from the spatial shifts in the way power is exercised through to its assemblage-like entanglements and, in turn, its progressive topological character. Throughout the book, a wide range of social, political and economic examples are drawn upon to illustrate a more provisional sense of power, ranging, for instance, from the seductive logic of privatized public spaces to the attempt by a data analytics company to manipulate political behaviour, through to the offshore spaces invented by rising financial elites to challenge the established banking order. Illustrating the new-found abilities of the powerful to make their presence felt, this book provides an accessible account of the practical workings of power in the present day. It will be invaluable to students and academics in human geography and urban studies as well as politics, sociology and cultural studies.
