What is Anisotropic Diffusion In image processing and computer vision, anisotropic diffusion, also called Perona-Malik diffusion, is a technique aiming at reducing image noise without removing significant parts of the image content, typically edges, lines or other details that are important for the interpretation of the image. Anisotropic diffusion resembles the process that creates a scale space, where an image generates a parameterized family of successively more and more blurred images based on a diffusion process. Each of the resulting images in this family are given as a convolution between the image and a 2D isotropic Gaussian filter, where the width of the filter increases with the parameter. This diffusion process is a linear and space-invariant transformation of the original image. Anisotropic diffusion is a generalization of this diffusion process: it produces a family of parameterized images, but each resulting image is a combination between the original image and a filter that depends on the local content of the original image. As a consequence, anisotropic diffusion is a non-linear and space-variant transformation of the original image. This program investigated the ability to perform image enhancement, based upon diffusion processing, on a purely quantum or hybrid classical-quantum (type-II) computer. Given that image processing based upon solving partial differential equations has become more prevalent and developed in recent years and given that the fundamental equation of non-relativistic quantum mechanics, the Schrodinger equation, may be viewed as diffusion in imaginary time, quantum information may provide practical speedups for image processing tasks. This research investigated which diffusion and related Schrodinger equations may be simulated using quantum lattice gas algorithms (QLGAs), which are attractive because of their ability to simulate non-linear phenomena. Extension of QLGAs to perform selective image smoothing in support of image enhancement has been developed and demonstrated for multi-dimensional as well as anisotropic diffusion algorithms.

This thesis proposes to model, analyze and implement a nonlinear diffusion model problem for reduction in noise and speckle in image processing applications. Specifically, the Perona-Malik model equation that is widely studied in the image processing community is implemented via explicit and implicit finite difference algorithms. The solution methodology converts discrete image data onto a finer non-uniform grid space via interpolation techniques and applies the proposed numerical algorithms to reduce noise. These numerical algorithms are investigated analytically and computationally for appropriate choices of nonlinear diffusion coefficient functions. We derived conditions for stability and convergence of the proposed numerical algorithms. Numerical experiments are presented on benchmark problems that show the robustness and reliability of the proposed numerical schemes.

"Many recent techniques for digital image enhancement and multiscale image representations are based on nonlinear partial differential equations. This book gives an introduction to the main ideas behind these methods, and it describes in a systematic way their theoretical foundations, numerical aspects, and applications. A large number of references enables the reader to acquire an up-to-date overview of the original literature. The central emphasis is on anisotropic nonlinear diffusion filters. Their flexibility allows to combine smoothing properties with image enhancement qualities. A general framework is explored covering well-posedness and scale-space results not only for the continuous, but also for the algorithmically important semidiscrete and fully discrete settings. The presented example range from applications in medical image analysis in computer aided quality control."--Back cover.

Premiering in 1990 in Antibes, France, the European Conference on Computer Vision, ECCV, has been held biennially at venues all around Europe. These conferences have been very successful, making ECCV a major event to the computer vision community. ECCV 2002 was the seventh in the series. The privilege of organizing it was shared by three universities: The IT University of Copenhagen, the University of Copenhagen, and Lund University, with the conference venue in Copenhagen. These universities lie ̈ geographically close in the vivid Oresund region, which lies partly in Denmark and partly in Sweden, with the newly built bridge (opened summer 2000) crossing the sound that formerly divided the countries. We are very happy to report that this year’s conference attracted more papers than ever before, with around 600 submissions. Still, together with the conference board, we decided to keep the tradition of holding ECCV as a single track conference. Each paper was anonymously refereed by three different reviewers. For the ?nal selection, for the ?rst time for ECCV, a system with area chairs was used. These met with the program chairsinLundfortwodaysinFebruary2002toselectwhatbecame45oralpresentations and 181 posters. Also at this meeting the selection was made without knowledge of the authors’identity.

In image processing, "motions by curvature" provide an efficient way to smooth curves representing the boundaries of objects. In such a motion, each point of the curve moves, at any instant, with a normal velocity equal to a function of the curvature at this point. This book is a rigorous and self-contained exposition of the techniques of "motion by curvature". The approach is axiomatic and formulated in terms of geometric invariance with respect to the position of the observer. This is translated into mathematical terms, and the author develops the approach of Olver, Sapiro and Tannenbaum, which classifies all curve evolution equations. He then draws a complete parallel with another axiomatic approach using level-set methods: this leads to generalized curvature motions. Finally, novel, and very accurate, numerical schemes are proposed allowing one to compute the solution of highly degenerate evolution equations in a completely invariant way. The convergence of this scheme is also proved.
